U2's Joshua Tree gets reissue
To mark the 20th anniversary of its breakthrough album
The DVD is understood to comprise a July 4, 1987, show at the Paris Hippodrome, as well as the documentary Outside It's America. Produced by Brian Eno, The Joshua Tree shot U2's commercial fortunes into the stratosphere. The album's first three tracks were huge singles, with both "With or Without You" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" hitting No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Britney turns herself in for hit-and-run case
Continuing her quest to keep herself in the news as much as possible, Britney Spears reported to a Los Angeles police station last night to face charges of hit and run and driving without a valid license, police said. Spears turned herself in around 9 p.m. and left about 45 minutes later. Spears was fingerprinted and photographed wearing large designer sunglasses and a black turtleneck dress and jacket.
The charges stem from an August 6 wreck during which paparazzi filmed Spears steering her car into another vehicle as she tried to turn into a spot in a Studio City parking lot. The video showed her walking away after assessing the damage to her own car. The owner of the other car, Kim Robard-Rifkin, filed a police report three days later. Spears had been ordered to report for booking ahead of an October 25 court appearance.
T.I. remains in jail on weapons charges
In the latest round of T.I. vs. T.I.P., it seems the latter has a decisive advantage. The Atlanta rapper, whose good-versus-evil split personality was the central theme of his last album, was ordered today to remain in custody on federal weapons charges until a bail hearing later this week. T.I. was arrested Saturday, hours before his scheduled performance at the BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta, with federal authorities claiming that he tried to buy three machine guns and two silencers from a man cooperating with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives.
T.I.--real name Clifford Harris--appeared briefly in federal court today to face the charges. The 27-year-old rapper stand accused of asking a bodyguard to purchase up to 26 firearms for T.I. and his entourage. The bodyguard cooperated with ATF officers and T.I. was arrested in a parking lot in Atlanta where federal officials said he planned to pick up machine guns and silencers his bodyguard bought for him. It is against federal law for a convicted felon to have another person get firearms on their behalf.
Police probe alleged Diddy assault
New York City police are investigating an alleged incident in which a man says Diddy punched him out during a dispute at a club last weekend. The 31-year-old man told police that he and Diddy--real name Sean Combs--had been arguing over a woman at the Kiosk nightclub in NYC's SoHo district before the hip-hop mogul punched him in the face.
But Diddy's lawyers have claimed the incident was a harmless "disagreement" between acquaintances. "We hope this matter will be resolved without the filing of any criminal charges as it was a disagreement among acquaintances, not a criminal assault," attorney Benjamin Brafman said in a statement. Police are trying to locate more witnesses before questioning Combs, according to the Associated Press.
This is the latest in a string of alleged confrontations for the 37-year-old rap mogul. Earlier this month, a hip-hop promoter filed a $5 million lawsuit claiming Combs unleashed three violent bodyguards on him in another New York City nightspot. A lawsuit filed in March claimed that Diddy punched a man after the man asked him to stop hitting on his girlfriend, with Diddy reportedly telling the man that he was going to "smack flames" out of the man's a**.
In related news, Diddy recently took legal responsibility for his sixth child, Chance, a 15-month-old girl Combs fathered with Atlanta model Sarah Chapman, according to the New York Daily News. Combs sought DNA tests to prove that he was indeed the girl's father. "At first, I wasn't sure if this was my child," he told the paper. "Now that it has become clear she is, I will take care of her for the rest of her life." Combs has three children with his estranged girlfriend, Kim Porter, and they each have a child of their own.
Lil Wayne goes to court, explains
To hear Lil Wayne tell it, his latest arrest comes down to a paperwork error and the wrath of Hurricane Katrina. Wayne appeared in an Atlanta court yesterday to face charges of drug possession on a case that dates back to August 2006, but resurfaced earlier this month when the rapper was arrested as a fugitive in Boise, Idaho.
Wayne's attorney Williams Head told the Associated Press that his client missed the court date, which lead to his arrest last weekend, because the summons was sent to an old address and the hip-hop star didn't get it. The notice to appear in court was sent to Carter's New Orleans residence, which did not exist after Hurricane Katrina, the attorney said. "All they did was take his address off his driver's license," Head said. "So he never got it." The 25-year-old rapper--real name Dwayne Michael Carter Jr.--is expected to appear again in court October 31.
Foxy pleads not guilty in another assault case
Already serving a year at Riker's Island for violating her probation, Foxy Brown was back in court today to face charges that she threw her cell phone at a neighbor who complained about the volume of her car radio in July. The 28-year-old rapper--real name Inga Marchand--appeared in Brooklyn state Supreme Court wearing casual street clothing and entered a not guilty plea.
Last Friday, Brown twice refused to appear in court for her arraignment. Prosecutors rescheduled her appearance for Tuesday, warning that if she refused to show up, the court would issue an order allowing correction officers to put her in handcuffs and force her onto a bus. Brown is in jail for skipping her anger management classes and traveling out of the city without permission, both violations of her probation for assaulting manicurists at a nail salon three years ago. Foxy has a new album, Brooklyn's Don Diva, out next month.
Houston singer Big Moe dies
Yet another obese hip-hopper has died at a young age, as Houston crooner Big Moe died Sunday afternoon at an area hospital after he reportedly suffered a heart attack last week. Big Moe--real name Kenneth Moore--was 33 years old. He died Sunday afternoon at Houston's Ben Taub hospital after being hospitalized for more than a week and put into an induced coma, a hospital spokesman told the Houston Chronicle.
Big Moe, who rapped and sang, was a member of the late DJ Screw's rap collective the Screwed Up Click, often providing the hooks on Screw tracks. DJ Screw died of a heart attack in 2000 after a reported overdose of codeine-laced cough syrup. Big Moe often rapped about the drug and the titles of his first two albums made reference to it. His first album was called City of Syrup and his most successful offering was 2002's Purple World, for the color most often associated with the drug.
