The four members of Little Dragon live in the rich musical hotbed of Gothenburg, Sweden.
But quite soon, they'll likely be living in your head.
The group's music mixes soul and jazz with flourishes of trip-hop, an organic-electronic hybrid that both soothes and smolders. But the biggest reason their music will get stuck in your head is the sultry, unmistakable voice of Yukimi Nagano.
Best known as a singer with eclectic electronic groups such as Koop, Sleepwalker, Stateless, and Swell Session, Nagano possesses a voice for the ages, a jazz-inflected summer's breeze that elicits both a smile and a head nod.
Propelled by the beats and melodies of keyboardist Hakan Wirenstrand, bassist Fredrik Kallgren Wallin, and drummer Erik Bodin, Little Dragon isn't afraid to take the minimalist approach. On "Twice," the opening track on the band's self-titled debut, Nagano sings a tale of regret over a minor-key piano ballad with understated yet richly effective strings amid deft cosmic swirls.
Nagano took the unconventional approach of writing many of the melodies with only drum parts, placing the beat front and center and adding in instrumentation and effects. The result is a beat-driven, laser-focused sound that is subtle yet beguiling.
