Battles, Of Montreal, Arcade Fire, and Justice emerge as top contenders for annual independent music awards.
Showing love to a heap of acclaimed artists who won't likely get any face time at the Grammys, the 2008 PLUG Independent Music Awards unveiled its nominees this week.
Band of Horses
Battles and Of Montreal led all nominees with seven apiece, while Arcade Fire and Justice were right behind them with six apiece. Band of Horses and Panda Bear, the solo side project of Animal Collective's Noah Lennox, scored five each.
The awards, which will be voted online by fans and doled out at an awards ceremony March 6 at New York's Terminal 5, focus on both independent music and the media that cover and promote it. There will be 29 awards handed out, each of which has 12 nominees.
The six aforementioned nominees were joined in the artist of the year category by Animal Collective, El-P, Okkervil River, Radiohead, Spoon, and The National.
