Kanye, Winehouse top Grammy nods

By Jim Welte

Rapper and singer lead with eight and six nominations, respectively; Foo Fighters, Jay-Z, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, and T-Pain nab five apiece.

One has a reputation for being a sore loser, while the other has often seemed on the verge of just being a loser.

Kanye West Kanye West

Kanye West and Amy Winehouse, two multitalented artists who often get as much attention for their offstage antics as their music, led all nominees for the 50th annual Grammy Awards, which were announced this morning.

West scored a leading eight nominations, while Winehouse landed six. The Foo Fighters, Jay-Z, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, and T-Pain all received five nominations.

Most of West's eight nominations came in the rap category, including best rap album (Graduation) and two entries for best rap song ("Can't Tell Me Nothing" and "Good Life").

Meanwhile, the 24-year-old Winehouse, who has been photographed frequently looking dazed and disheveled in recent weeks, will have a chance to try to get herself together for what could be a memorable night.

The singer was nominated in all four of the top categories: record of the year, album of the year, song of the year (a songwriter's award), and best new artist.

Amy Winehouse Amy Winehouse

Winehouse's Back to Black was nominated for album of the year, along with West's Graduation, the Foo Fighters' Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, country singer Vince Gill's These Days, and jazz pianist Herbie Hancock's tribute to Joni Mitchell, River: The Joni Letters.

"Rehab," Winehouse's smash hit song that has spawned a litany of puns about her drug and alcohol problems, will compete for record of the year with the Foo Fighters' "The Pretender," Timberlake's "What Goes Around...Comes Around," Beyonce's "Irreplaceable," and Rihanna's "Umbrella," featuring Jay-Z.

"Rehab" and "Umbrella" were nominated for song of the year, alongside country star Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats," pop band Plain White T's "Hey There Delilah," and singer/songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae's "Like a Star."

Women dominated the field for best new artist, with Winehouse vying with
Canadian singer/songwriter Feist, country singer Taylor Swift, R&B singer Ledisi, and the female-fronted rock band Paramore.

Winners will be announced during ceremonies in Los Angeles on February 10.

How long have they had best electronic album category? Nice to see Feist in there for a few, but, yeah, Grammy awards are completely irrelevant and worthless.
