Lineup for annual blockbuster music event in Austin, Texas, also corrals Black Crowes, My Morning Jacket, Black Keys, Bun B, and Vampire Weekend.
Austin, Texas, will again be the center of the musical universe in mid-March, with thousands of bands, fans, and would-be tastemakers flocking to the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival.
The full lineup for the event, which takes place March 12-16 throughout downtown Austin, will be announced in the coming weeks, but SXSW has already given ample reason to attend.
Lou Reed will serve as the keynote speaker at the event, discussing his career as part of the kick off of the event, which will also feature a screening of Lou Reed's Berlin, Julian Schnabel's documentary about Reed's recent performance of his landmark 1973 album.
Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore is set to interview acclaimed composer Steve Reich, and Daryl Hall of Hall & Oates, Ticketmaster CEO Sean Moriarty, and Sire Records president Seymour Stein are also set to speak.
The musical lineup so far is chock full of both veteran and emerging acts. R.E.M. will debut songs from its forthcoming album Accelerate, while the Black Crowes will play Stubb's in the midst of their North American tour in support of their new album, , which hits stores March 4.
Akron, Ohio-based blues duo the Black Keys will begin iyd spring tour at SXSW, in support of their Danger Mouse-produced Nonesuch album, Attack & Release. The 11-track set features a guest appearance by guitarist Marc Ribot.
The preliminary lineup also includes My Morning Jacket, the Black Keys, Vampire Weekend, Mala Rodriguez, the revamped Breeders, the Kills, Jens Lekman, Foreign Born, Robyn, Fleet Foxes, Bun B (whose partner in UGK, Pimp C, died last November), MGMT, My Brightest Diamond, the Raveonettes, Devotchka, Lindstrom, Daniel Lanois, the Von Bondies, Blitzen Trapper, White Williams, Man Man, and many more.
