Ohio blues duo's fifth album, produced by Danger Mouse, hits stores April 1, with a tour kicking off at SXSW in mid-March.

For the Black Keys, an aborted side project with the now-late Ike Turner has spawned a new Danger Mouse-produced album that has them veering into new sonic terrain.

The Akron, Ohio-based duo will release its fifth album, Attack & Release, on April 1 via Nonesuch. The 11-track set was recorded in the aftermath of a Danger Mouse-produced album from Turner, on which guitarist/singer Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney performed, but that project was never completed.

Attack was recorded at Cleveland's Suma Studio, the Keys' first time recording outside of their own Akron-based studio.

"Danger Mouse came in as our collaborator," Auerbach said in a statement. "He has a real ear for melody and arrangement, and that was a big part of this record, as was the studio...a really special place."

"The place is covered with dust, it smells like a moldy cabin, and it looks like a haunted house," Carney added. "I think Dan and I were intrigued to work with somebody as a producer, and with an engineer like Paul [Hamann], because we both realized we couldn't teach ourselves anything more and it was best to start learning from other people."

The album reportedly features several additions to the duo's stripped-down sound of guitars and drums, with banjo, organ, bongos, and flute adorning some tracks, according to Billboard.

The album includes guest appearances from guitarist Marc Ribot and Carney's uncle, multi-instrumentalist Ralph Carney, both of whom have long been members of Tom Waits' band. Eighteen-year-old bluegrass singer Jessica Lea Mayfield lends her pipes to the final track, "Things Ain't Like They Used to Be."

Auerbach and Carney will kick off a North American tour in support of Attack at SXSW in mid-March, playing more than 20 dates before concluding at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston on May 17.
