Contenders for top US indie music prize include Arcade Fire, Burial, Feist, Justice, LCD Soundsystem, M.I.A., Spoon, Stars, Wilco, and Working for a Nuclear Free City.

The Shortlist Music Prize has never shied away from bestowing America's top indie music honor on international talent, having picked Icelandic group Sigur Ros and Irish singer Damien Rice in years past.

Arcade Fire Arcade Fire

This year should be no different, as the 10 finalists for the prize, announced this week, include three Canadian entries, two British groups, a French duo, and a Sri Lankan rapper, along with three American bands.

The finalists for the Shortlist prize, which seeks to honor the year's best album that hasn't sold more than 500,000 copies in the US, includes Canada's Arcade Fire, which was nominated for its sophomore album, Neon Bible. iPod ad darling and fellow Canadian Feist is up for The Reminder, while Stars rounded out the contenders from the Great White North with In Our Bedroom After the War.

Acclaimed and anonymous British dubstep producer Burial made the cut with Untrue, while UK electronic quartet Working for a Nuclear Free City's Businessmen and Ghosts did as well.

Kala, the sophomore effort from Sri Lankan rapper M.I.A., was also nominated, as was the debut album of French electronic duo Justice. Spoon's Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, LCD Soundsystem's Sound of Silver, and Wilco's Sky Blue Sky round out the list.

The 10 finalists were selected from the initial Long List of 54 nominated albums by a panel of five Listmakers: recording artists Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol) and Ronnie Vannucci (the Killers), journalist Rev. Moose (CMJ), radio DJ Chris Douridas (KCRW) and the hosts of Hunnypot Internet Radio.

The winner of the seventh annual Shortlist Music Prize will be announced in February. Past winners include Cat Power, N*E*R*D, TV on the Radio, and Sufjan Stevens.

Am I the only one on the Arcade Fire backlash bandwagon? Let's step back a minute and recognize this band for what it is: overwrought and lacking in sophisticated musicality. They just aren't very good.

Win Butler, Régine Chassagne, Richard Parry, Tim Kingsbury, and Win's kid brother William Butler formed the Arcade Fire in summer 2003. The experimental indie rock quintet, who hail from Montreal, initially began when the elder Butler spotted Chassagne singing jazz standards at a local art exhibit at Concordia University in their hometown. From...

Burial

Of all the artists past and present who claim to let their music do their talking for them, Burial is one of the elite band of whom this truly is the case. In fact, so reluctant is he to engage with the cult-of-personality hoopla that surrounds almost every modern producer and musician of merit, that he remains a genuine recluse; he has never...

Feist Feist

She was born Leslie Feist in Calgary in the mid-'70s but goes by her surname when it comes to making music for a living. The Jhay-inspired songstress got her start playing in a high-school punk band called Placebo (not to be confused with the U.K. modern rock act of the same name). After winning a battle of the bands contest, Placebo played...

LCD Soundsystem LCD Soundsystem

LCD Soundsystem debuted with Losing My Edge, a single that became one of the most talked-about indie releases of 2002. A self-effacing spoof of the outrageous pissing contests that often occur whenever music geeks cross paths ("I was there at the first Can show in Cologne," etc.) laid over a puttering electronic beat with the occasional bursts...

M.I.A. M.I.A.

If you read a lot about new music on the Web, odds are pretty good that, at some point between the September 2004 release of "Galang" and the March 2005 release of Arular, you were struck with the urge to turn your computer off or maybe even heave it out of a nearby window. If you don't read a lot about new music on the Web, the preceding...

Spoon Spoon

Hailing from Austin, TX, Spoon originated in 1994 as a collaboration between Britt Daniel (vocals/guitar) and Jim Eno (drums) and a rotating cast of supporting players. Their hybrid of indie and punk resulted in a number of Sonic Youth and Pixies comparisons after their 1996 debut album, Telephono. Spoon toured with the likes of Pavement, Guided...

Wilco Wilco

Wilco rose from the ashes of the seminal roots rockers Uncle Tupelo, who disbanded in 1994. While Jay Farrar, one of the group's two singer/songwriters, went on to form the band Son Volt, his ex-partner Jeff Tweedy established Wilco along with the remaining members of Tupelo's final incarnation, which included drummer Ken Coomer as well as...

Working for a Nuclear Free City Working for a Nuclear Free City

Working for a Nuclear Free City came together in January 2004. Initially the studio project of the founding members Phil Kay (producer/keyboards) and Gary Mclure (guitars) since 1999, 2004 saw the band first take to the stage, now joined by drummer Jon Kay, and bassist Ed Hulme. After a number of years confined solely to the studio, they began...

Arcade Fire
The Arcade Fire are not an emo band. Fronted by the husband-and-wife team of Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, the group's emotional assault -- rendered even more poignant by the dedications to recently departed family members contained in the liner notes -- is brave, empowering, and dusted with something that many of that genre's angst-fueled...

It's hard not to wonder if Wilco's breakthrough 2002 release, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, would have been such a critical success and so eagerly embraced by the indie rock community if it hadn't become such a cause célèbre thanks to the band being unceremoniously dropped by Reprise Records, and then signed by Nonesuch after the album had become...
