Bill for three-day event, set for May 24-26 at the Gorge Amphitheatre in Wash., also includes Death Cab for Cutie, Modest Mouse, M.I.A., many more.

Yet another major music festival unveiled its lineup today, but the 2008 Sasquatch Music Festival has taken a decidedly different tack in doing so.

The Cure The Cure

Whereas the likes of Jack Johnson, Radiohead, Metallica, Portishead, and Pearl Jam have topped the bills of festivals such as Bonnaroo, Coachella, and All Points West, Sasquatch has picked three alternative-rock stalwarts as headliners.

The three-day festival, set for May 24-26 at the scenic Gorge Amphitheatre in Quincy, Wash., will feature performances from R.E.M., the Cure, and the Flaming Lips. The Lips will present their "U.F.O. show," which features a replica flying saucer and a dizzying cast of stage decorations and props.

The Sasquatch bill also includes Modest Mouse, M.I.A., Michael Franti & Spearhead, Flight of the Conchords, the New Pornographers, the Presidents, the National, Tegan & Sara, Built to Spill, the Hives, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Ozomatli, Cold War Kids, the Breeders, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, Okkervil River, Dengue Fever, Jamie Lidell, and Crudo, a new collaboration between Mike Patton and Dan the Automator.

The bands will perform on three stages, and the festival has added a comedy tent as well, with the lineups of comedians forthcoming.

Tickets go on sale at noon March 8 for $55.50 per day. On March 10, prices go up to $65.50 per day, and the week of the festival, beginning May 19, $75.50 per day. Sasquatch is offering a three-day ticket for $154.50 until March 9. Further details and VIP package details can be found on the Sasquatch Web site.

R.E.M. mark the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, "Radio Free Europe," was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought guitar pop back into the underground...

The Cure The Cure

Out of all the bands that emerged in the immediate aftermath of punk rock in the late '70s, the Cure was one of the most enduring and popular. Led through numerous incarnations by guitarist/vocalist Robert Smith (born April 21, 1959), the band became notorious for their slow, gloomy dirges and Smith's ghoulish appearance. But the public image...

For a long time, maybe 15 years or so, Robert Smith rumbled about the Cure's imminent retirement whenever the band had a new album ready for release. Invariably, Smith said the particular album served as a fitting epitaph, and it was now time for him to bring the Cure to an end and pursue something else, maybe a solo career, maybe a new band,...
