First-ever Outside Lands event, set for Aug. 22-24 in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, will unveil full lineup in coming weeks.

The folks behind the colossal Bonnaroo music festival have teamed up with a fast-growing Northern California concert promoter to launch a three-day music blowout in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park in August.

Ready to take over Golden Gate Park. Ready to take over Golden Gate Park.

If the event's headliners are any indication, it should be a doozy.

Another Planet Entertainment and Bonnaroo promoter Superfly unveiled the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival this week, lining up Radiohead, Jack Johnson, and Tom Petty as headliners. The event will take place August 22 to 24, with a full lineup, ticket prices, and on-sale dates to be unveiled in the coming weeks.

The event, which will span four stages and three massive fields within Golden Gate Park, is named for the region in the western half of San Francisco in which it is occurring. The area now known as the Sunset District and Golden Gate Park was known as Outside Lands in the 19th century, as the area was covered by sand dunes was largely inaccessible.

Superfly and Another Planet plan to make the event an eco-friendly affair and will make a "special annual donation" to the San Francisco Recreation & Park Department. According to the event's application to host the event, it plans to pay as much as $1.2 million to the parks department if the event is sold out for all three days. The organizers estimate attendance of between 35,000 and 45,000 people per day, not to exceed 60,000 in a day.

Outside Lands will come just weeks before the 2nd Annual Treasure Island Music Festival, which was widely praised as one of the better music festivals in the US in 2007.

Let's hope that Tom Petty's pot-smoking hippie attitude doesn't corrupt San Francisco.

Radiohead are hypocrites. they talk about carbon neutral touring yet they are being promoted by Clear Channel-owned Live Nation and playing disgusting disneyland-type venues like the Shoreline Ampitheatre.

Radiohead Radiohead

Radiohead was one of the few alternative bands of the early '90s to draw heavily from the grandiose arena rock that characterized U2's early albums. But the band internalized that epic sweep, turning it inside out to tell tortured, twisted tales of angst and alienation. Vocalist Thom Yorke's pained lyrics were brought to life by the group's...

Jack Johnson Jack Johnson

Before Jack Johnson perfected his rock star ways, he was a champion surfer on the professional route, with a sponsorship with Quiksilver. It was a life that was second nature for the Hawaiian native, for he began chasing waves as a toddler, and by the time he was 17, he was an outstanding athlete on the pipeline. However, Johnson was also...

Tom Petty Tom Petty

Upon the release of their first album in the late '70s, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers were shoehorned into the punk/new wave movement by some observers who picked up on the tough, vibrant energy of the group's blend of Byrds riffs and Stonesy swagger. In a way, the categorization made sense. Compared to the heavy metal and art rock that...

Tom Petty's concept for his third solo album is laid bare in its very title: it's called Highway Companion, which is a tip-off that this record was made with the road in mind. As it kicks off with the chugging Jimmy Reed-via-ZZ Top riff on "Saving Grace," the album does indeed seem to be ideal music for road trips, but Petty changes gears pretty...
