The inaugural Outside Lands festival, set for Aug. 22-24 in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, has added a slew of big names to a lineup that already included previously announced headliners Radiohead, Jack Johnson, and Tom Petty.

The event will feature performances from Beck, Wilco, Widespread Panic, Primus, Manu Chao, Ben Harper, Steve Winwood, Broken Social Scene, Galactic, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings.

It will also include sets from Black Mountain, Drive-By Truckers, Cafe Tacuba, Devendra Banhart, Regina Spektor, Cold War Kids, Andrew Bird, Steel Pulse, M. Ward, Dredg, the Cool Kids, Grace Potter, Nellie McKay, Bon Iver, Sidestepper, Little Brother, K'Naan, and Donavon Frankenreiter.

In addition to Primus, the event will highlight performances from several San Francisco Bay Area artists, including Lyrics Born, Goapele, Two Gallants, The Coup, The Mother Hips, ALO, Matt Nathanson, and Sean Hayes.

Tickets for Outside Lands go on sale March 30.

As previously reported, the event's organizers plan to pay as much as $1.2 million to the San Francisco Recreation & Park Department if the event is sold out for all three days. The organizers estimate attendance of between 35,000 and 45,000 people per day, not to exceed 60,000 in a day.

It's like for hippies with decent taste in music. Also, Jack Johnson is a festival whore.

One of the most inventive and eclectic figures to emerge from the '90s alternative revolution, Beck was the epitome of postmodern chic in an era obsessed with junk culture. Drawing upon a kaleidoscope of influences -- pop, folk, psychedelia, hip-hop, country, blues, R&B, funk, indie rock, noise rock, experimental rock, jazz, lounge, Brazilian...

Wilco Wilco

Wilco rose from the ashes of the seminal roots rockers Uncle Tupelo, who disbanded in 1994. While Jay Farrar, one of the group's two singer/songwriters, went on to form the band Son Volt, his ex-partner Jeff Tweedy established Wilco along with the remaining members of Tupelo's final incarnation, which included drummer Ken Coomer as well as...

Widespread Panic Widespread Panic

One of the many neo-hippie jam bands inheriting the road-warrior mantle left behind by the Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic established a devout grassroots following on the strength of constant touring and a loose, rootsy brand of Southern rock informed by jazz and blues textures. The group's origins dated to 1982, when vocalist John Bell and...

Manu Chao Manu Chao

Manu Chao helped begin the Latin Alternative movement, way back in the '80s -- although it had no name then -- and in his later work he cuts a cross-cultural swathe across styles and geographic boundaries. Chao, whose real name is Oscar Tramor, was born on June 26, 1961 in Paris, to Spanish parents -- his father Ramon Chao a respected writer,...

Primus Primus

Primus is all about Les Claypool; there isn't a moment on any of their records where his bass isn't the main focal point of the music, with his vocals acting as a bizarre side-show. Which isn't to deny guitarist Larry LaLonde or drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander any credit; no drummer could weave in and around Claypool's convoluted patterns as...

It's hard not to wonder if Wilco's breakthrough 2002 release, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, would have been such a critical success and so eagerly embraced by the indie rock community if it hadn't become such a cause célèbre thanks to the band being unceremoniously dropped by Reprise Records, and then signed by Nonesuch after the album had become...

Widespread Panic
One thing that can definitively be said about Widespread Panic is that they sound like no one else but themselves, whether they are playing covers live or performing original material. In some ways, that's the worst thing one can say about them as well. On most of their studio recordings, Widespread Panic come off as so utterly unfocused and...

Primus
On the surface, all Primus albums seem to sound alike, especially to outsiders (read: anyone who either respects the group but doesn't get them, or the minority that actively hates them, particularly Les Claypool's demented comedy schtick). That's not really true, even if the same basic elements remain in place each time, no matter who is in the...
