With "Touch My Body" and "4 Minutes," respectively, singers each leapfrog over Presley in the Billboard charts record book.
Elvis Presley has been knocked off his perch by a double diva smackdown.
Both Mariah Carey and Madonna this week eclipsed Billboard chart records held by Presley, topping the King for the most No. 1s in the rock era and the most top 10s in the rock era, respectively.
Carey's "Touch My Body" was the top-selling single in the US last week, soaring into the top slot from 15th place on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song is Carey's 18th No. 1 hit; she has now topped Presley and moved into second place for most No. 1s ever, behind the Beatles' tally of 20.
Carey's forthcoming full-length album, E=MC2, hits stores April 15. "I really can never put myself in the category of people who have not only revolutionized music but also changed the world," Carey told The Associated Press on Tuesday via phone from London. "That's a completely different era and time. ... I'm just feeling really happy and grateful."
As for Madonna, the Queen of Pop's Timbaland-produced single with Justin Timberlake, "4 Minutes (To Save the World)," jumps to No. 3 on the singles chart. The track is Madonna's 37th top 10 song, giving her sole possession of the most top 10 hits in the rock era.
Madonna's latest album, Hard Candy, is set to hit stores April 29.
