On the heels of the innovative release of Ghosts I-IV, Trent Reznor says of new 10-track album, "This one's on me."
Trent Reznor is no fan of traditional music-business models. He and his mates in Nine Inch Nails are also exceedingly prolific.
The result is a free Nine Inch Nails album called The Slip, access to which was posted on the band's Web site today. The 10-track album is available as a free download in several formats, including MP3, FLAC, Apple lossless, and WAV, after users enter an e-mail address.
"Thank you for your continued and loyal support over the years--this one's on me," Reznor wrote in a statement on the site.
Nine Inch Nails plans to release The Slip on CD and vinyl in July and will use traditional brick-and-mortar distribution. All downloads will also include a PDF with lyrics and artwork.
Reznor has also licensed all 10 tracks from The Slip to the Creative Commons, allowing fans to download the multitrack files and remix the songs as they wish. Reconstructed songs can then be posted on the NIN remix site.
