Hova bites back, politely; Thriller gets preserved; singer heads to jail; musical on the way; rapper gets eight years.

Jay-Z takes high road on Oasis slam

Not-so-Bosom Buddies. Not-so-Bosom Buddies.

If he slagged off on a different rap star in his diatribe about hip-hop having no place atop the bill at this year's Glastonbury Festival, Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher may have ended up with his head in a toilet. But Jay-Z is a classy fella, and when asked by UK newspaper The Sun this week about Gallagher's comments, he took the high road.

"We don't play guitars, Noel, but hip-hop has put in its work like any other form of music," he said. "This headline show is just a natural progression. Rap music is still evolving. From Afrika Bambaataa DJ-ing in the Bronx and Run DMC going platinum, to Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince winning the first rap Grammy, I'm just next in line. We have to respect each others' genre of music and move forward."

Jay-Z also told the tabloid that he was surprised by the outcry to him being tapped as the Glastonbury headliner. "I've never been involved in anything this controversial," he continued. "What's the big deal about doing a show? I guess it's heritage, and people hold that dear to their heart and see it one way, but that's how the world is."

Thriller to be preserved by Library of Congress

Thriller Thriller

The Library of Congress is set to preserve the best-selling pop album of all time. Twenty-five selections were added to the National Recording Registry on Wednesday, part of the library's attempt to save America's aural history by archiving recordings deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

Michael Jackson's 1982 all-time best-seller Thriller topped the list, and was joined by pianist Herbie Hancock's 1973 fusion smash Headhunters and a 1977 record of Earth sounds that flew aboard the spacecraft Voyager in the event that alien life forms might have encountered the craft. The registry also added works by Roy Orbison, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Kitty Wells, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, and a collection of Navajo songs.

The Library of Congress chooses 25 recordings each year to add to its registry and preserve. Nominations come from a Library of Congress preservation board and online suggestions from the public. The selections for 2007 bring the registry's total to 250.

Weiland spends 10 hours in jail

Did a bid. Did a bid.

Scott Weiland has emerged from a Van Nuys, Calif. jail a changed man, rejuvenated and dedicated to being a hard-working singer and a better person. He accomplished all of that in just 10 hours, less than 14 minutes of which was spent in an actual cell.

The Stone Temple Pilots frontman had been sentenced to eight days in jail for a second DUI conviction. The sheriff's inmate Web site indicated that Weiland surrendered at 8:55 a.m., and that he was a free man by 7 p.m. He reportedly spent less than 14 minutes of that time in a cell.

Not surprisingly, the former Velvet Revolver singer knew he wouldn't serve out his full term, given that the Stone Temple Pilots are set to begin their reunion tour at Columbus, Ohio's Rock on the Range festival on May 17, less than eight days after he entered jail.

The singer also received four years' probation, was fined $2,000, and was ordered to take part in an 18-month alcohol program. He was potentially looking at a year behind bars for DUI with a prior conviction.

Stone Temple Pilots officially announced their reunion with a private performance for about 350 people last month at the Houdini Mansion in Los Angeles. The event might be released as part of a DVD.

Bee Gees musical headed to Broadway

Bee Gees Bee Gees

A musical based on the songs of the Bee Gees is being planned for both London's West End and for Broadway. At an event in central London to unveil a green plaque honoring the group's achievements, founding member Robin Gibb told BBC News that the project was already in the pipeline and could be on stage in the next 12-16 months.

Gibb unveiled the plaque on the facade of the former home of the band's manager and producer Robert Stigwood, where the trio spent much of their time rehearsing and composing songs between 1968 and 1980. Gibb said it was also where they first met actor John Travolta for the making of the film Saturday Night Fever.

Remy Ma sentenced; Papoose not a Rhodes Scholar

Papoose and Remy Ma Papoose and Remy Ma

Rapper Remy Ma was sentenced to eight years in prison for shooting a woman outside a Manhattan nightclub. The sentencing came down two days after her wedding to fellow rapper Papoose, which was planned to occur in the Rikers Island jail, was reportedly called off after jail officials found a would-be handcuff key in Papoose's possession. Yes, Papoose tried to sneak a handcuff key into his wedding in prison.

The 26-year-old rapper--real name is Remy Smith--was convicted on charges of assault, weapon possession, and attempted coercion in the wake of the 2007 shooting of Makeda Barnes Joseph last July in a dispute over money. Remy had faced as much as 25 years in prison.

As for Papoose, he has not been charged with any crime, although the Darwin Awards should come calling quite soon.
