A founding member of legendary New York crew Brand Nubian (responsible for classic hits like "All For One" and "Punks Jump Up to Get Beat Down"), Lord Jamar is a veteran in this rap game. He dropped five albums with the group, from 1990's One for All through 2004's Fire in the Hole, and has also stayed busy behind the scenes. As a producer, he was a key ingredient in the early success of political rap heroes dead prez, contributing extensively to their stellar debut, Let's Get Free. When not in the studio, he has been blessing television screens around the world, with acclaimed appearances on clutch shows such as Oz and The Sopranos. But music remains his first love, a sensibility evident on his long-awaited solo project The Five Percent Album.

Lord Jamar Lord Jamar

Throughout his new full-length, Jamar aims to educate listeners on the practices of the 5% Nation (sometimes referred to as The Gods and Earths), a culture that encourages mental awareness, understanding, and knowledge of self. Back in the Afro-Centric era of late '80s/early '90s hip-hop, many artists embraced and celebrated its teachings in music, most notably Rakim, Poor Righteous Teachers, Wu-Tang Clan, and, of course, Brand Nu themselves. As today's commercial-rap landscape continues to stress ignorance through bloated, often imagined or highly exaggerated tales of cocaine trafficking and remorseless gunplay, Lord Jamar offers a welcome return to music for the mind, delivering poignant verses set to soulful, New York-minded production.

Sadat X Sadat X

As a member of Brand Nubian, Sadat X (born Derek Murphy) was one of the key MCs who related messages inspired by the Five Percent Nation. Two years after Brand Nubian's third album, Everything Is Everything, he made his solo debut with Wild Cowboys, which built on his lyrical reputation on top of tough, jazz-inflected arrangements. The album,...

Grand Puba Grand Puba

Maxwell Dixon, better known as Grand Puba, is best-known for fronting Brand Nubian for the group's first album -- and the excellent full-blown reunion album, 1998's Foundation -- but he actually made his commercial debut with the Masters of Ceremony, a group who released a 1988 album (Dynamite) on 4th & Broadway. Puba went solo with 1992's Reel...

Brand Nubian Brand Nubian

The Five Percent Nation of Islam was a popular inspiration for numerous thinking-man's rap groups during the early '90s, and Brand Nubian was arguably the finest of the more militant crop. Although they were strongly related to the Native Tongues posse in style and sound, they weren't technically members, and were less reserved about...

Brand Nubian
Brand Nubian never sold as many albums as the many West Coast rappers burning up the charts in the early '90s, but the New York group commanded great respect in East Coast rap circles. In black neighborhoods of New York and Philadelphia, Nubian's debut album, One for All, was actually a bigger seller than many of the platinum gangsta rap...

Brand Nubian
Their first album after losing talented MC Grand Puba, Sadat X and Lord Jamar were joined by DJ Sincere for this 1993 effort, which earned some notoriety for the homophobic taunts included in "Punks Jump Up to Get Beat Down." Elsewhere the record is a rallying call for Louis Farrakhan's Nation of Islam - notably on "Allah and Justice" and...
Brand Nubian "Everything Is Everything"
Brand Nubian
Brand Nubian cover a wide variety of styles and issues on this album. Their message is positive, but they come down hard on stereotypes and blacks killing other blacks. Sampling from rock and jazz alike, the group's scratchy rhythms are a good complement to the lyrics. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
