U2 unveil lyric hunt contest

U2 U2

To kick off promotion for its forthcoming U218 hits collection, U2 is holding "Hunt the Lyric," an online contest with the winner landing an all-expenses paid trip to see the band play at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu on December 9. To win, fans must locate banners featuring short U2 lyrical excerpts on a variety of Web sites across the globe. The sites are listed on the band's Web site. Each lyric will have one letter highlighted and fans will be asked to collect all the letters. The collected letters will then form the answer to a question the band will pose on its site. The winner will be announced on November 6. U218 will feature 16 of the Irish band's greatest hits, along with two new tracks produced by Rick Rubin. The first is a collaboration with Green Day on a cover of the classic punk track "The Saints Are Coming" by the Slits.

Jay-Z lands deal with Anheuser-Busch

Not welcome in China. Not welcome in China.

When Jay-Z was cruising the streets of Monaco with auto racing stars Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Danica Patrick, he wasn't just filming the video for "Show Me What You Got," the first single off his forthcoming album, Kingdom Come. Hova was also filming ads in conjunction with Anheuser-Busch, with whom the Def Jam mogul has inked a deal to serve as cobrand director for Budweiser Select. The company said today that Jay-Z will input "his unique spin, thoughts, and insights on various brand programs." The first tangible results of the deal are a pair of cross-promotional TV ads, both of which show clips from the "Show Me What You Got" video and similar footage. The first ad aired during this week's Monday Night Football on ESPN. Kingdom Come is set to hits stores November 21. Jay-Z, who is part owner of the NBA's New Jersey Nets, also currently appears in a series of ads touting the 2006-07 NBA season on TNT.

McGraw gets Hollywood star

Tim McGraw Tim McGraw

Country star Tim McGraw garnered a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame yesterday, according to the Associated Press. "I really still don't know how it happens, maybe they made a mistake or something," McGraw joked as he was surrounded by wife Faith Hill, actor Billy Bob Thornton, and a large group of fans. McGraw's sidewalk star was unveiled in front of the Virgin Records store on Hollywood Boulevard. He wore his signature black cowboy hat to shade him from a sunny autumn day in Southern California. "It's been a great ride for me for a long time," he said. "This summer will make 18 years that I've been on the road playing music, making my living." McGraw, 39, made his movie debut two years ago in Friday Night Lights, costarring with Thornton. McGraw is the son of the late Major League Baseball pitcher Tug McGraw. He has sold more than 33 million albums, 4 million singles, and had 26 No. 1 singles.

Diddy: No wedding bells

Porter and Diddy. Porter and Diddy.

Although his longtime girlfriend Kim Porter is expecting twins, Diddy has no immediate plans to marry her. The rapper told the New York Daily News that he will only marry if the "time is right." The couple, who are expecting twins in December, already have a son, Christian, who was born in 1996. They briefly split while the hip-hop star dated Jennifer Lopez but got back together in 2003.

"When I'm ready," Diddy--real name Sean Combs--said of marriage. "I have to be ready to get married. If I marry anyone, Kim will be the woman." In an interview with Vibe, Diddy blamed the demise of his relationship with Lopez on his reluctance to commit. "I couldn't commit to [Lopez[ the way she wanted me to," he said. "Everybody who ever meets the girl winds up marrying or wanting to marry her. I couldn't be like Cris [Judd] and Ben [Affleck] and Marc [Anthony]."

Whitney files for divorce

Whitney and Bobby. Whitney and Bobby.

Whitney Houston followed through with her plans to divorce husband Bobby Brown this week, filing divorce papers in Orange County Superior Court one month after filing for legal separation from Brown, Houston's publicist Nancy Seltzer said. The move serves as the beginning of the end of a tumultuous 14-year marriage that was marked by drug arrests and stints in rehab. Houston, who is reportedly working on a comeback album, is expected to ask for custody of the couple's 13-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina, and that Brown, 37, be allowed visitation rights.

Brown, who also has two teenage children with a Massachusetts woman, recently paid up to $11,000 in delinquent child support after being threatened with arrest two weeks ago if he stepped back into the state. Brown's attorney has said he was having a "very difficult" time due to the separation initiated by Houston.

One of the brightest R&B stars of the late '80s and early '90s, Bobby Brown was the man who popularized new jack swing, a blend of classic soul, urban synth-funk, and hip-hop rhythms that often featured rap breaks in between the conventionally melodic verses and choruses. There's good reason for Tim McGraw's endurance at the top of contemporary country: he's a restless visionary who's worked hard to improve as an interpretive singer.
