Dre lands film production deal; Morrissey picks burial spot; Jadakiss indicted on gun, drug charges; Noreaga leaves Def Jam; country legend eyes green energy project.
Dr. Dre, New Line ink film production deal
His long-awaited Detox album is still MIA, but Dr. Dre is finding time in his life to produce feature films, as the acclaimed hip-hop producer has inked a multiyear deal with New Line Cinema. The agreement calls for Dre to initially work on dark comedies, with an eventual move to horror films. Variety reports that Dre feels the move is a natural development, given that he has directed music videos in the past and is planning on forging a career as a director. New Line's Toby Emmerich told the trade paper: "Everything Dre has worked on becomes a hit, and one of the reasons for that is that he never put his name on anything that he doesn't really believe in. His records have always been very narrative in nature, and you can tell from his songs that he understands how to tell a story."
Morrissey says he's picked his burial site
It's never too early to address end-of-life decisions, at least if you're Morrissey. The British crooner told the UK's Daily Express this week that he has chosen a location to be buried. The paper reports that Morrissey is seeking a plot near that of Johnny Ramone at Los Angeles celebrity cemetery Hollywood Forever. "I like that cemetery. I stumbled across Johnny Ramone's stone and thought it was very nicely placed," he told the paper. "I sat there for a long time and I felt quite good about it. It was nice his bones were under the soil I was sitting on. So yeah, that's my spot. Death is a serious thing, certainly not to be sneezed at."
Jadakiss indicted on gun, drug charges
Jadakiss was indicted Thursday on gun and drug charges stemming from an incident last October in which he was arrested with three other men in his native Yonkers. Police said they stopped the car he was in after smelling marijuana and then found the gun. Jadakiss--real name Jason Phillips--entered a not guilty plea to charges of possessing a loaded handgun and marijuana. "I have yet to see or hear of any evidence connecting my client to possessing this weapon," the rapper's lawyer, Clement Patti, told the Associated Press. He said Jadakiss was in the back seat and didn't know there was a gun in the front console.
N.O.R.E. leaves Def Jam
Following dismal sales for his reggaeton album, NORE y La Familia, rapper N.O.R.E. has left Def Jam, insisting it's time to move after canceling his contract. "I love Def Jam and every bit of history that we have together, but it's time to move on," he told AllHipHop.com. "I'm fully on my own and I want to be my own boss." N.O.R.E. said he had no hard feelings and wouldn't be releasing any songs blasting Def Jam bosses Jay-Z or Antonio "L.A." Reid. "This is what I asked for," he said. "I'm just grateful to have a chance to show my executive side. So it's about time and I'm very thankful to all of the Def Jam personnel and staff. I still have great relationships in the building."
Merle Haggard going green
Merle Haggard is thinking about buying a second home in his native Oildale, California, in order to develop a green energy project. The country legend told the nearby Bakersfield Californian that he wants to found a "sensible" green energy project to help the United States kick its fossil fuel habit. Haggard said he would team with local resident and actor Charlie Napier on the project, which could also feature a museum and live music venue. The "Okie from Muskogee" singer may have taken inspiration from fellow country legend Willie Nelson, who last year launched his own BioWillie brand of biodiesel for truckers.
