Children and partner agree to bury the late Godfather of Soul in a confidential location as they battle over control of his estate.
Nearly two full months after his death, the children and partner of James Brown have agreed to bury the late Godfather of Soul as they continue to squabble over control of his estate.
Brown, who died December 25 at the age of 73, will be buried in a confidential location, the lawyer of his partner Tomi Rae Hynie told Reuters.
"The children and the wife, my client Tomi Rae Brown, have come to an agreement, and they have decided that he will be buried in a decent place but it's going to be kept confidential," attorney Robert Rosen said. "Assuming a court order is signed, he could be buried in the next few days."
Brown's body had been kept in an undisclosed location for the past several weeks as his six children debated whether to bury him on his estate at Beech Island, South Carolina, as Brown wished. The heirs were considering whether to turn the estate into a Graceland-esque museum in Brown's honor, but the legal status of Hynie complicated matters.
Brown and Hynie have a 5-year-old son, James Jr., and married in 2001. But Hynie was married at the time, and the marriage was thus annulled and the couple never exchanged vows again. Neither Hynie nor the couple's son was included in Brown's will, which was drawn prior to their would-be marriage.
Hynie recently launched a legal challenge for half of Brown's estate and access to their South Carolina home, from which she was excluded in the days and weeks after his death. She has since been allowed to go in and collect items belonging to her.
Despite the dispute, Brown's family and Ms. Hynie have united in an attempt to remove three trustees who are handling the estate, which they claim has been mismanaged.
A South Carolina judge recently ruled that the trustees would now be supervised by a special administrator.
