Eleven-day event, curated by the legendary rocker, will also feature performances by Air, Deerhoof, Secret Machines, and the Polyphonic Spree.

David Bowie has cooked up quite an indie rock stew for the inaugural High Line Festival.

The legendary rocker, who curated the H&M-sponsored event, picked a lineup that includes Arcade Fire, with whom Bowie has performed, as well as Air, Deerhoof, Secret Machines, the Polyphonic Spree, and Daniel Johnston.

The May 9-19 event will also boast a May 19 show by comedian Ricky Gervais, performances by Laurie Anderson and John Cameron Mitchell, a public art exhibition, and screenings of Bowie's 10 favorite Spanish-language films.

The High Line festival is being held at a variety of venues near the High Line, a public park being created atop a long-abandoned elevated railway line on the west side of Manhattan.

'"The request was for me to choose artists and acts that I myself would go out of my way to see," Bowie said on his Web site. "Although this inaugural year will be modest in scale, we've been pretty lucky in that many whom I asked have accepted.

"I'm also pleased that many emerging artists are participating alongside more established talents that represent a fairly wide cross section of disciplines within the arts community," he continued. "I would really hope that the exposure this festival affords will help these folk get the attention they deserve."

The High Line Festival music schedule:

5/9 - The Arcade Fire - Radio City Music Hall

5/10 - Air - Theatre at Madison Square Garden

5/11 - The Polyphonic Spree - Hammerstein Ballroom

5/15 - Deerhoof - Irving Plaza

5/16 - Daniel Johnston - High Line Ballroom

5/19 - The Secret Machines - High Line Ballroom

David Bowie David Bowie

The cliché about David Bowie says he's a musical chameleon, adapting himself according to fashion and trends. While such a criticism is too glib, there's no denying that Bowie demonstrated remarkable skill for perceiving musical trends at his peak in the '70s. After spending several years in the late '60s as a mod and as an all-around music-hall...

Arcade Fire Arcade Fire

Win Butler, Régine Chassagne, Richard Parry, Tim Kingsbury, and Win's kid brother William Butler formed the Arcade Fire in summer 2003. The experimental indie rock quintet, who hail from Montreal, initially began when the elder Butler spotted Chassagne singing jazz standards at a local art exhibit at Concordia University in their hometown. From...

Deerhoof Deerhoof

By turns cuddly and chaotic, San Francisco's Deerhoof mixes noise, sugary melodies, and an experimental spirit into sweetly challenging and utterly distinctive music. The group began as the brainchild of guitarist Rob Fisk and drummer/keyboardist Greg Saunier in 1994; early releases, such as 1995's 7"s Return of the Woods M'Lady and For Those of...

Air Air

More apt to cite stately rock paragons Burt Bacharach and Brian Wilson as their inspirations than Derrick May or Aphex Twin, the French duo Air gained inclusion into the late-'90s electronica surge due chiefly to the labels their recordings appeared on, not the actual music they produced. Their sound, a variant of the classic disco sound coaxed...

Arcade Fire
The Arcade Fire are not an emo band. Fronted by the husband-and-wife team of Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, the group's emotional assault -- rendered even more poignant by the dedications to recently departed family members contained in the liner notes -- is brave, empowering, and dusted with something that many of that genre's angst-fueled...

Deerhoof
After seven albums' worth of gleeful pandemonium, Deerhoof calm things down a bit with The Runners Four, a collection of songs that are even more restrained than Milk Man and the Green Cosmos EP. Perhaps trying for the unpredictability of their earlier work got too, well, predictable for the band. Even though the manic intensity that...
