Seattle dance company takes on Nirvana
One might not associate the spastic, charged dancing in the video for Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" with the art of contemporary dance, but one dance company is set to make that connection anyway. Seattle-based Spectrum Dance Theater is set to premiere Nevermind, a dance performance based on the acclaimed album from the Seattle rockers. The performance debuts at Seattle's Moore Theater this weekend, 13 years after Kurt Cobain's Seattle suicide.
"The tragedy of [Cobain's] drug addiction that didn't allow him to see with the kind of clarity that would have made for different choices, I was just kind of drawn to that," artistic director Donald Byrd told the Seattle Times. "One of the things I was struck by was how many contradictions there were in the music, from the sweet and tender to the loud and angry. There's the big loud rock that grew out of the punk movement, and then there's the sweet kind of introspective side."
Kim Mathers ignores deal to play nice
So much for playing nice. One day after agreeing in court to not make any disparaging comments about her ex-husband, Kim Mathers appeared on New York radio station Hot 97 to diss the Detroit rapper. The twice-divorced couple had agreed Monday to a truce in an effort to protect their 11-year-old daughter Hailie.
But on Hot 97's Miss Jones morning show Tuesday, Mathers said Eminem's request of Kim to stop making derogatory comments about him was hypocritical. "How many songs has he done about me?" she said. "How many interviews has he done where he's talking about freedom of speech? I do a couple of interviews and he's crying like a little girl."
She also accused the 34-year-old rapper of being "disconnected from reality" during the interview, and revealed that she had no contact with him despite living only a short distance away. Asked about the possibility of the two reconciling their differences, Mathers said: "We don't work good together. It's not good for the kids." Reps for Eminem have declined comment.
Black Eyed Pea arrested on DUI suspicion
Taboo, the guy who will forever be known as that other guy in the Black Eyed Peas, was arrested Tuesday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the Associated Press. The 31-year-old rapper--real name Jaime Luis Gomez--was involved in a car crash in Industry, California, and was taken into custody by police and charged with possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, possession of a prescribed medication without a prescription, and driving under the influence. Police did not disclose a court date.
Weiland's wife explains dustup
Mary Weiland issued a statement today that sought to clear up the controversy surrounding her alleged chaotic weekend with her husband, Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland. Her behavior, Mary Weiland said, was brought on by a "reaction to an imbalance in medications" she takes to treat a bipolar disorder.
"Reports that we were fighting at the Graciela Hotel are untrue," the statement reads. "Scott was simply trying to help calm me down. I want to make it very clear that he did not hurt me in any way." The couple has reportedly paid the hotel for the damages. "Most importantly, neither of our children were witness to any of these events and they have been in the care of a family member," the statement concludes. "We appreciate all your concerns and how supportive people have been."
No word on whether or not Scott Weiland has any clothes left after his wife allegedly torched his $10,000 wardrobe on their front lawn.
Suge Knight refutes eviction reports
One-time rap mogul Marion "Suge" Knight refuted claims that he was evicted from his posh pad in Los Angeles under the watchful eye of police late last week. In a statement, Knight's publicist Jonathan Wolfson said, "Suge Knight was not evicted from his Wilshire condominium. I don't understand how his move could have been misunderstood as an eviction. He is currently living at an undisclosed location in Malibu."
Squad cars and a detective were reportedly present as the former Death Row Records boss left the property, along with all of his possessions, late last week. Knight's assets have been frozen since August 2005, and a series of subsequent court rulings have left Knight in a stage of major financial disrepair. Rap-A-Lot Records filed a $300,000 lawsuit to recover funds they alleged they invested in the making of an album featuring the late Tupac Shakur.
Knight filed for bankruptcy in April 2006 after a court ruling took Death Row Records away from Knight and under the auspices of a court-appointed trustee. That judgment ordered Knight to pay $107 million to Lydia and Michael Harris, who claimed to have invested $1.5 million in Death Row.
Mika says he faces death threats
Mika, whose debut album, Life in Cartoon Motion, is out this week, says he has received death threats over his reluctance to comment on his sexuality. The 23-year-old, Beirut-born singer told thislondon.co.uk that he received the threat from a fan who "wasn't happy that I won't talk about my personal life like that." The UK-based pop star--real name Mica Penniman--also said that he gets "hate messages all the time, a death threat."
However, Mika told the Daily Mirror earlier this month: "People say, 'You don't talk about sexuality because you're worried about success in the US.' I say, 'Have you heard the f***ing album? There's a song about a married man who has a homosexual affair. There's no enigma."
