In a riveting set in San Francisco, daughter of legendary sitar player Ravi Shankar adds a new dimension to her father's music.

SAN FRANCISCO--Comparing Indian maestro Ravi Shankar's two daughters is en exercise in apples vs. oranges, but Norah Jones and Anoushka Shankar share at least one thing in common: They were both born to play music.

Jones might get all the pub and the multiplatinum record sales, but in an enchanting set at the Herbst Theatre here last night, Shankar showed herself to be an exceptional musician.

Seated on the stage behind her sitar and accompanied by a seven-piece band, Shankar moved fluently from traditional ragas to more experimental tracks that featured electronic beats.

The highlight of the night was "Solea," a piece Shankar composed with flamenco pianist Pedro Ricardo for her acclaimed 2005 album, Rise. The song set an Indian melody to a flamenco rhythm, with Shankar and pianist Leo Dombecki trading beautiful flourishes.

Although her sound is firmly rooted in the sonic traditions her father helped foster, Anoushka Shankar showed herself able to propel that sound to new heights.

The daughter of Ravi Shankar moves far from the tradition on her fourth solo album, using her considerable sitar skills (understandably, she'll never be her father's equal, but who ever will?) as just part of her arsenal on an album that strives hard to blend the past and cutting edge. It succeeds in part, as on "Solea," where Indian and...

It may be far too obvious to even mention that Norah Jones' follow-up to her 18-million-unit-selling, eight-Grammy-winning, genre-bending, super-smash album Come Away With Me has perhaps a bit too much to live up to. But that's probably the biggest conundrum for Jones: having to follow up the phenomenal success of an album that was never...
