Sri Lanka grime queen prepping sophomore effort with help from Diplo and Timbaland.

One of the most talked-about albums of 2005 is about to get a sequel.

M.I.A. M.I.A.

M.I.A., the pint-size grime rapper from London by way of Sri Lanka, unveiled details of her sophomore effort today, calling her forthcoming record Kala, which will be in stores June 26. The album is the follow-up to Arular, which was a near-unanimous inclusion of the best-of lists for 2005. Kala will be led off by the single "Bird Flu," which M.I.A. uploaded to her MySpace page soon after the outbreak of avian flu at one of the farms of British poultry processing giant Bernard Matthews. The video for the track features chaotic imagery to go along with the song's blistering percussion.

The album will feature contributions from her longtime collaborator Diplo, as well as superproducer Timbaland, whose new solo album, Shock Value, featured an appearance by the Sri Lankan singer. Timbaland is said to have produced the song "Jimmy" for M.I.A., a song described in The Guardian as a "Bollywood disco track."

M.I.A. has confirmed only two live performances to date, at the Sasquatch Festival in George, Washington, on May 26 and at the Virgin Festival in Toronto on September 8-9.

Why no mention of SWITCH???

I've been following this album closely and I know who's behind it and when this album drops ithink most people will be suprised to find that the majority of the tracks are produced by SWITCH and even those that are not will have additional production by SWITCH and I think the Guardian may have got it wrong with Timbaland and "Jimmy" guess who the producer of that is....

Also the ARULAR album had three tracks on it by a producer called A.Brucker who also happens to be the same producer as SWITCH.

M.I.A and SWITCH is likely to be the hottest production team since Timbaland and Missy teamed up!

I may be completely wrong, but I guess will find out later this year!

If you read a lot about new music on the Web, odds are pretty good that, at some point between the September 2004 release of "Galang" and the March 2005 release of Arular, you were struck with the urge to turn your computer off or maybe even heave it out of a nearby window. If you don't read a lot about new music on the Web, the preceding...

Diplo

One thing of which Diplo (aka Diplodocus, Wes Diplo, and Wes Gully) cannot be accused is being afraid to experiment with new music. With his mash-up mixtapes, he found and created a sound where his musical tastes -- '80s pop, electronica, Dirty South hip-hop, and his major influence, Miami bass music -- intersect. His attention-grabbing projects...

Timbaland Timbaland

Timbaland ascended to the top of the rap industry in the late '90s, remarkably balancing his in-demand hitmaking abilities with his outlandish production style. Few rap producers were capable of such a balance between commerce and craft. Timbaland produced an endless list of hits, primarily for a select group of affiliates (Missy Elliott,...

Diplo
Although the immense artistic success of DJ Shadow and Tricky in the mid-'90s should have sparked a creative powder keg among independent-minded hip-hop producers, most of those who followed were either uninspired or rather over-inspired (aka slavish). Diplo, a Philadelphian by way of Mississippi and Florida, does much better than those...

Timbaland
The second part of a record that Timbaland apparently began with Missy Elliott's Under Construction, this one may have a few similarities -- the stylistic bent and the production finesse certainly -- but the replacement of an energized rapper like Missy with a mush-mouthed mess like Magoo (Timbaland's usual henchman) could be an immediate...
