UK ads featured the likes of Kurt Cobain, Joe Strummer, Joey Ramone, and Sid Vicious in heaven and wearing Dr. Martens.
A week of uproar over the use of dead rockers images in a series of Dr. Martens ads has concluded today with the firing of the agency that created them.
The famous footwear's parent company, Airwair Ltd., apologized in a statement for the ads' use of the images of dead rockers Kurt Cobain, Joe Strummer, Joey Ramone, and Sid Vicious wearing Dr. Martens in heaven. The company said that it has terminated its relationship with advertising giant Saatchi & Saatchi, which created the ads.
"Dr Martens is very sorry for any offense that has been caused by the publication of images showing dead rock icons wearing Dr Martens boots," Airwair CEO David Suddens said. "Dr Martens did not commission the work as it runs counter to our current marketing activities. ... As a consequence, Dr Martens has terminated its relationship with the responsible agency."
But Saatchi & Saatchi has stood by the four print ads, which were set to appear in an upcoming issue of Fact Magazine in the UK. The ads were intended to support the durability of Dr Martens by showing each musician, known to wear the shoes, wearing them in heaven.
"We believe the ads are edgy but not offensive," Kate Stanners, executive creative director at Saatchi & Saatchi said in a statement. "There has been blog commentary both for and against the ads, but it is our belief that they are respectful of both the musicians and the Dr. Martens brand. We regret that the controversy has led Dr. Martens to terminate the contract with Saatchi & Saatchi."
The statement went on to say that the firm was investigating the employee who leaked the ads online, but noted that it had obtained the right to use the images in the UK from photo agency Corbis.
