Episode Eight
There's been a lot of talk recently about the New Detroit, with several Midwestern artists finally getting shine outside of the Shady one's shadow. Phat Kat is at the forefront of that movement, a hard-working emcee who's been paying dues and making dope music since the early 1990s. He comes by the studio to discuss his brand new album Carte Blanche, his longtime friend and producer J Dilla, and today's hip-hop scene in the D.
If you know about Stones Throw, you know about Wildchild. The hyper-lyrical Oxnard rapper got his start as a member of Lootpack (alongside Madlib and DJ Romes), before going solo with Secondary Protocol back in 2003. Here, he performs live in San Francisco with J.Rocc of the World Famous Beat Junkies on the decks.
We also take it back to '99, with a video for "Nas is Like." The first single (and arguably best song) off his third album I Am..., the King of Queensbridge teams up with the one-and-only DJ Premier for this surefire banger. Enjoy!
