Wentz gets into brawl; Timbaland does too; Farrell, Navarro spar over breakup; film gets screening dates; singer gets service.
Wentz brawls with fan
Fall Out Boy unplugged its instruments for a performance in Chicago last night, but it was quite a charged night anyway. Following a short acoustic set at a party hosted by Spin magazine in the band's hometown of Chicago, Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz punched a fan as he left the venue, sparking a brawl that reportedly left the man with a ripped shirt and a bloody nose. It was not the first time Wentz mixed it up in the crowd at one of the band's shows. In an e-mail to MTV News, Wentz said the man had been heckling him all night and actually grabbed him as he left the venue.
"We get heckled onstage all the time, and while I'm a jerk, I'm not the kind of person who would ever lash out at someone simply over this," he wrote. "I mean I'm not as big as Akon and haven't written as many good songs. The truth is on the way out the door I had to pass directly next to the guy, and I knew it, so I kept my head down and walked out. As I did, the guy reached out and grabbed me and said something I couldn't really hear--it was a glorious use of the English language, though. As he grabbed me, I punched him. Yell all you want at me, say whatever, but in a situation like that, I will defend myself. After that, of course, it got chaotic, [but] we have several independent witnesses that gave statements saying he grabbed me first...I am not worried over the outcome, as I was clearly in the right. Anything anyone else is saying or writing is simply not true."
Timbaland arrested in Germany
It's not as though you would have wanted to mess with Timbaland a decade ago, but the acclaimed producer's current ripped physique would surely make anyone think twice before verbally assaulting him. But apparently Robert F., a man in Cologne, Germany was not intimidated, calling Timbaland the N-word because the producer was talking to his girlfriend following Timbaland's show with Justin Timberlake there.
Timbaland reportedly went nuts on the guy, according to TMZ.com, and he and his posse allegedly attacked the man outside Hotel Intercontinental late Sunday night. The fight then moved from the lobby bar to the street in front of the hotel. The man was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance, and Timbaland was arrested and released on 750€ (about $1,000) bail early Monday morning. German authorities are still investigating the incident.
Farrell, Navarro spar over Jane's breakup
Former Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro is in the midst of a dispute with former Jane's frontman Perry Farrell over their band's breakup following its 2002 reunion. Farrell had recently claimed that the band's most recent breakup was sparked by Navarro's involvement with the CBS reality series Rock Star. But in a post on Navarro's 6767.com blog, "the timeline just doesn't make sense. I didn't even get a call about the idea of Rock Star until [Navarro's new band] the Panic Channel was recording demos."
The Los Angeles rockers originally split up in 1991, then briefly reconvened in 1997 before reforming properly in 2002. They released one album of new material, Strays in 2003, before promptly splitting again. In the course of promoting his new band, Satellite Party, Farrell had said, "[Jane's] broke up basically over reality TV, and I just couldn't believe it."
In the post, Navarro also quoted Farrell's boast that "I brought Jane's Addiction to life, it is only fitting that I am the one to bury her," before taking issue with the claim. "OK. So which is it?" asked Navarro in the blog. "Rock Star? He broke it up? We did? Either way it was four years ago, so I think it's about time to let it go."
Daft Punk film gets screening dates
Although it has made the rounds in international markets, Daft Punk's Electroma has been nowhere to be found in North America--until now. The feature film, which tells the tale of "two robots who journey across a mythic American landscape of haunting, surreal beauty on a quest to become human," will be screened in several cities this summer.
The film, written and directed by Daft Punkers Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, will be screened at Xpace in Toronto on Thursday and at the Stride gallery in Calgary June 28. It can be seen at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles on June 29, at Studio A in Miami on July 28, and on Sept. 8-9 at the Osheaga Festival in Montreal. The DVD will then be available through Vice Records in the fall. Daft Punk also has a series of live dates set for North America this summer, including a stop at the Lollapalooza festival in August.
George Michael gets community service
George Michael has avoided jail time for driving under the influence of drugs, as a British judge sentenced the singer to 100 hours of community service and banned him from driving for two years. Michael--real name George Panayiotou--pleaded guilty May 8 to a charge of driving while unfit through drugs.
Police said the 43-year-old pop star was found slumped at the wheel of his car in north London after witnesses observed the vehicle weaving onto the wrong side of the road at about 5 miles to 10 miles an hour in the early hours of Oct 2.
