Summer tour is terminated just days after former American Idol winner fired her longtime manager.

Kelly Clarkson has canceled her summer tour plans, capping off a string of events that has seen the multiplatinum singer battle her label over her new album and fire her manager.

The tour was canceled after ticket sales for the outing did not live up to the expectations of promoter Live Nation, which vowed to maintain its relationship with Clarkson and get her on the road soon.

"It is mind-blowing when you stop to think about what Kelly Clarkson has achieved during her young career," said Michael Rapino, CEO of tour promoter Live Nation, in a statement. "But ticket sales have not been what we anticipated and we came to the realization that we had bit off more than we could chew. In the end, we are in the Kelly Clarkson business and for that reason we believe that this decision will only benefit her and her fans in the long run."

The cancellation caps off a frenetic few months for Clarkson, who won the inaugural American Idol in 2002 and has been on a path to superstardom ever since. Her 2004 sophomore album Breakaway saw Clarkson establish herself as a breakout artist, garnering two Grammys and winning praise for moving toward a more rock-oriented sound.

But Clarkson has apparently moved in an even darker, more rock-oriented direction for My December, her forthcoming album that is set to hit stores June 26. Clarkson coproduced and wrote or cowrote all the songs on the album, but has faced protests from her label RCA Records/Sony BMG and its chairman, Clive Davis.

In an interview with Elle magazine last month, Clarkson contended that Davis offered her $10 million to drop five of her songs from My December in favor of more likely hits. "My resistance upsets a lot of people, because we could make a lot of money," Clarkson said in the interview. "And I'm not hatin' on money. ... I'm just not comfortable doing things that don't feel like me."

On Tuesday, she split with manager Jeff Kwatinetz amid continuing tension with her label and rumors of poor concert ticket sales. In a post on her Web site, Clarkson addressed the tour cancellation.

"I can't tell you how much I've been looking forward to getting out there to perform for y'all," she wrote. "In the craziness of the music business, performing is what I look forward to doing the most, so it really is disappointing for me to have to tell you that I won't be coming out to tour this summer. The fact is that touring is just too much too soon. But I promise you that we're going to get back out there as soon as is humanly possible to give you a show that will be even better."

The 36-date tour was set to kick off July 11 in Portland, Oregon, and continue through a September 26 date in Los Angeles. It will likely be reconfigured for smaller venues later in the year. Refunds are available at point of purchase. Her only scheduled live appearance at this time is the July 7 Live Earth benefit concert at Giants Stadium in New Jersey.
