As the 10-year anniversary of her smash solo debut approaches, enigmatic singer contributes to soundtrack and works on new material.

One of the most enigmatic artists in an industry full of peculiar personalities is ready to return to the spotlight--possibly.

Lauryn Hill Lauryn Hill

So said reps for Lauryn Hill at Sony BMG's Columbia Records, who noted the inclusion of a new track from the former Fugee on the soundtrack to the animated movie Surf's Up, which came out earlier this month.

"She's always working on new material," the label spokesperson told MP3.com. "But this is the beginning of more work coming from her."

No release date has been set for a new album from Hill, who is believed to have accumulated quite a bit of recorded material over the years that she has not chosen to release for one reason or another. Her last album was 2002's double-disc MTV Unplugged session.

Hill has acquired new management, and has recently gone back into the studio with the goal of making a new LP.

Surf's Up Surf's Up

The Surf's Up soundtrack features a song called "Lose Myself" from Hill. Set over a beat quite similar to Outkast's "Hey Ya!," the song features Hill singing, "I had to lose myself so I could love you better."

"We are thrilled to be a part of the return of Ms. Lauryn Hill," Surf's Up music supervisor Liza Richardson said in a statement. "Apparently, she related to [movie character Big Z's story--reaching the top, checking out for a while, doing some soul searching, and re-emerging with joy--and wrote and recorded a real celebratory summer jam session for Surf's Up. We're glad to have Lauryn back where she belongs!"

As she has for the past year or so, Hill has lined up a series of live dates throughout the world, including a return trip to the San Francisco Bay Area, where she played a year ago. Stops in Dubai, Turkey, and the Netherlands are all on her list, and Hill is also set to play a free concert August 6 in Brooklyn, New York, as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Concert Series.

As for the much-hyped Fugees reunion that saw Hill record at least one new song with Wyclef Jean and Pras, that is looking increasingly dead, as Pras noted last month.

I've always viewed life in the entertainment industry as this: once you're getting too hyped for your own good, it's time to start getting misunderstood. You go, girl!

She made very good music. Everyone is hating on her and not living their own life.
