Microsoft's digital music play hopes to generate buzz with live performances from Common, Mos Def, E-40, Clipse, UGK, and others.

Microsoft is hoping some of the top names in hip-hop will generate some buzz for its Zune digital music efforts this summer.

UGK UGK

The software giant is putting on live shows in Los Angeles, Chicago, and NYC under the moniker "Live at the BBQ," the name of the Main Source song that helped launch the career of one of rap's top emcees, Nas.

Zune has not said who will be playing at each date, but Common, Mos Def, Clipse, Cham, David Banner, UGK, Large Professor, Collie Buddz, E-40, and Joel Ortiz are all on the bill.

Zune said that it will announce additional artists soon, as well as specific dates and venues.

Invitations will be sent to fans from the Zune and hip-hop communities, and more information can be found on Zune.net closer to the event dates.

"'Live at the BBQ' is helping to bring hip-hop back to a golden age where records were produced and iconic artists rose directly out of their local communities," UGK's Bun B said in a statement. "It's a chance to put singles, ring tones, and industry hype aside and just get a bunch of our friends together for some great music and BBQ--let's eat."

Zune is pretty tight. I love the iPod, but Zune has a few things going for it that the iPod doesn't. Zune has a larger screen. I like that because it's way better for viewing videos. Who wants to watch a video on a small screen? I'd rather not. I need to get a Zune. I attempted to win one, but some girl snatched it from my finger tips. Sad. I know. Well, I really hope that this works out well. Seems really fun. There must be lots of good food, too.

Common Common

Common (originally Common Sense) was a highly influential figure in rap's underground during the '90s, keeping the sophisticated lyrical technique and flowing syncopations of jazz-rap alive in an era when commercial gangsta rap was threatening to obliterate everything in its path. His literate, intelligent, nimbly performed rhymes and political...

Mos Def Mos Def

Initially regarded as one of hip-hop's most promising newcomers in the late '90s, Mos Def expanded his reach in the years to come, establishing himself as a serious actor and also making a bid to reshape the rap-rock genre. His artistic career began in the late '80s as a television actor, a profession he began directly out of high school. By the...

Lil Jon Lil Jon

Atlanta and the surrounding area had always been a hotbed for party rap and bass music throughout the '90s, and more than anyone else, Lil Jon & the Eastside Boyz took these styles to the masses with a cutting-edge Dirty South attitude perfect for the burgeoning club scene of the time. The Atlanta-based rapper/producer began as a club DJ before...

Clipse Clipse

Hailing from Virginia, Clipse -- brothers Pusha T and Malice -- were one of the rare first artists to associate with the Neptunes. The Neptunes' Pharrell Williams first met the duo in the early '90s, was very impressed by their talents, and decided to help them get a gig. Hooking them up with the Elektra label, an early single flopped and the...

UGK UGK

Southern gangsta rappers Pimp C and Bun B formed UGK (aka Underground Kingz) in the late '80s and signed to Jive Records for their major label debut album, 1992's Too Hard to Swallow. After second album Super Tight..., UGK hit the R&B charts with 1996's Ridin' Dirty, which ascended to the number two spot. Dirty Money followed in late 2001. ~...

Common
Electric Circus cost and won Common some fans. It was very exploratory, especially so for a rap album released in 2002, containing developments -- some of which soared, some of which sank -- that few longtime followers could have foreseen. Listeners either felt Common was picking up fresh, new inspirations, or that he was just being distracted...

Rap and drugs. The somewhat unholy marriage is now decades deep. Not surprisingly, the conjunction has produced some dynamic musical results that have been readily smoked, ingested, and snorted by the mainstream music listening public. Back in the late '80s, Ice-T was one of the first rappers to blur the lines between the rap world and the...

DJ 007 from the well-revered Chop Shop crew handles the chopping and screwing on this hallucinatory collection of UGK's best. He uses an old Chop Shop trick to great effect on the collection: start things off mildly and get a little freakier with each progressive track. By the time "Take It Off" comes on, tempos are crawling, making the already...
