Episode Twelve
When discussing legendary, game-changing DJs, one name inevitably always comes up -- DJ Qbert. Known for his otherworldly hand skills, trailblazing career path, numerous technical innovations, and affinity for bugged-out humor, the Bay Area native has been likened to Hendrix with a pair of turntables and a mixer. Despite international fame and a hugely devoted fanbase, Q remains humble and down to earth, inviting us into his home to discuss his past, present, and future endeavors.
When their debut album Enta Da Stage dropped in 1992, Brooklyn trio Black Moon sparked the entire Boot Camp Clik movement, which is still going full speed ahead today. In our last episode, we connected with Da Beatminerz, who produced the record in its entirety, and this week, we check out Buckshot and DJ Evil Dee tearing it up live onstage in San Francisco, performing fan favorites "How Many Emcees" and "Buck Em Down (Remix)."
Speaking of the early nineties, who could forget the Pharcyde? These four Cali cats, alongside producer J-Swift, came out swinging with Bizarre Ride II Tha Pharcyde, showcasing funny rhymes, super-charismatic flows, and eclectic but always dope beats at a time when gangsta rap was just starting to take over. That whole LP is a classic (as is their slept-on follow-up Labcabincalifornia), but the song/video "Passin Me By" may be their crowning achievement.
