A collection of tracks from {$Lil' Romeo}'s {@Nickelodeon} television series, {^Romeo!} is an unambitious but satisfying release that benefits from some of the slickest productions from the house of {@No Limit}. While his father -- {$Master P} -- diminishes his impact with too many high profile, ambitious, but ultimately empty releases, {$Romeo} and his handlers always give the people -- teen people in this case -- what they want while slowly developing the artist. The infectious {&"Romeo! Show Theme,"} {&"I Like That,"} and {&"Party"} are simple, inspired, and safe tracks pumped-up by {$Romeo}'s enthusiasm and charm. On the other hand, the loopy {&"Dime Pieces"} and the old-school, jump-rope jam {&"Don't Play Games"} display more of desire to try something different and keep the collection from feeling like a quick buck cash-in. The closing {&"Soldiers"} isn't the usual boasting about {@No Limit} Soldiers but a patriotic tribute to the men and women of the U.S. Army that's heartfelt and sweet with getting sugary. Although the album is short -- clocking in at under forty minutes -- everything is edited together tightly, creating a whirlwind of teen swagger and pleasing beats, most of the latter supplied by the very busy {$Myke Diesel} and {@No Limit} up-and-comer {$Drumma Boy} who has a love for tight loops with lush strings. {$Drumma}'s big score is {&"On My Way"} but just like his nearly as good {&"Ride,"} it's a horribly short number that will hopefully show up again stretched-out ({^Romeoland}'s {&"Bobblehead"} shows up again here slightly edited, so anything's possible). Although {^Romeo!} may just be placeholder product, it surprises in places, pleases the whole way through, and shows more growth for {@No Limit}'s talented little soldier. While {@New No Limit} seems unable to recapture the excitement of the old days with their more {\gangsta} releases, {$Master P} and his label hit pay dirt every time they release something (CD, single, television show) by {$Lil' Romeo}. As executive producer, {$Master P} seems to be giving {$Lil' Romeo} (his son if you aren't hip) the most attention and care out of any the {@New No Limit} artists, and {^Romeoland} is nothing if not well crafted. It's an inoffensive kids album for sure, but at 14 tracks it's not overstuffed and the bright beats are definitely fresh. You can thank producers {$Myke Diesel} and {$Nick Cannon} for that. They are two of {@New No Limit}'s brightest talents and the men behind all of {^Romeoland}'s highlights. {$Cannon}'s high point is the bubbly single {&"My Cinderella,"} which coolly interpolates {$Shai}'s {&"If I Ever Fall in Love."} {$Diesel}'s {&"My Girlfriend"} is the catchiest number on the album with a hooky call-and-response chorus that won't be leaving your head anytime soon. {$Lil' Romeo} is a confident rapper with just enough bravado and just enough charisma. No {\hardcore} thug is waiting for his next innocent album, but there's a good chance his or her kids are. It's rare that the eight-year-old set and their parents can agree on an album, but {^Romeoland} ends up being not only tolerable for parents, but actually enjoyable. That's rare in any genre, let alone the thuggish world of {\rap}. Chalk it up to the talents of {$Master P}, {$Diesel}, and {$Cannon}, but mostly {$Romeo}, just about the flyest guy under five feet. ~ David Jeffries, All Music Guide

Like just about every other album on the new (or old, for that matter) {@No Limit} label, {^Game Time} is overlong and musically undernourished, its best songs built on samples threadbare from frequent use. But it also reminds you that labelhead {$Master P} didn't make his millions by accident, because his 12-year-old son, {$Lil' Romeo}, is the embodiment of his true genius: marketing. While nearly every other pint-sized rapper is champing at the bit to be treated like a grownup, {$Lil' Romeo} sounds perfectly content to be a kid on his sophomore outing. (And so does his dad, shrewdly recognizing the potential audience for a G-rated young MC who nevertheless has some street cred, thanks to his bloodlines). The competition would be trying to rhyme an older woman like {$Solange Knowles} into the sack, but when she shows up as {$Romeo}'s duet partner on {&"True Love,"} he's respectful in a way guaranteed to warm the hearts of frazzled parents. Despite the obvious image tinkering behind the scenes, though, his fresh-faced appeal is very real -- the sort of charisma that once made {$Stevie Wonder} and {$Michael Jackson} national sweethearts. {$Lil' Romeo} certainly isn't in that weight class, and his verses don't suggest an incredible musical future, either. Yet his charm gives a spark to even tired creations like {&"2 Way,"} built on the familiar strains of {&"It Takes Two,"} and suggests his true destiny -- like that of another clean-talking young rapper, {$Will Smith} -- probably lies in front of the camera, instead of behind the mic. ~ Dan LeRoy, All Music Guide
