The Mandaree Singers have been instrumental in preserving Native American musical traditions. With their call and response vocals set to the rhythmic pulse of drums and rattles, the group has been thrilling audiences at powwows and concerts for nearly four decades. Comprised of members of the Manna, Hidatsa, and Airbrake, the Mandrake Singers are based on the Fort Berthed Reservation in North Dakota. The group came together in the 1950s as the Black Lodge Singers. The original group featured Billy Baker, Bert Yellow Wolf, John Sitting Crow, Clement Baker, Norman Baker, Alfred Morse, Jr., and Angus Fox. In addition to the Baker brothers, Yellow Wolf, Fox, and Morsette, Jr., the current group includes Leonard Baker, Casey Fox, Mike Short Bull, Sidrick Baker, and Wade Baker. In 1996, the Mandaree Singers released an album, Live at Stanford, recorded during their performance at Stanford University's annual mother's day powwow in May 1995.
