cubase situation

my copy of cubase works great except for when i go to record my guitar...
it'll start out just dandy for the first few seconds, but then gets a kind of "phaser effect" sound going on. i don't know if it's some kind of buffer issue or whatever. wait... it may be a volume situation... i'm gonna try turning the vol down a bit when i record...
if any of you have seen a similar thing then let me know how you handled it.
