The event, held throughout New York from Oct. 16-20, unveiled its preliminary list of performers today, and it includes plenty of rock fare, particularly Spoon, Mates of State, Coheed and Cambria, British Sea Power, Mute Math, The Ponys, Islands, Tiny Masters of Today, Vietnam, Deerhunter, and acoustic guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela, among others.

Hip-hop is well represented on the early list, which features Devin the Dude, Del The Funkee Homosapien, Little Brother, and Brother Ali.

CMJ has also put together a strong list of electronic acts to date, including James Lavelle's UNKLE electronic project, VMA-nominated French house group Justice, as well as fellow house producers Simian Mobile Disco and Kravinsky.

Spoon will close out the festival with a set at Roseland Ballroom on Oct. 20.

Though Spirit into Sound does not break much new ground creatively for Mickey Hart, it does feature some nice elements. Hart's new age sort of blend of melodic elements and percussion are here again, centering around a very spiritual sound with heavy South American and African tribal influences. "We don't have bar mitzvahs," raps Brother Ali on "Room With a View," "we become men the first time our father hits us." Instead, his carefully observed lyrics draw on his...
