Thirty years after shelving Chrome Dreams, legendary songwriter plans to release a follow-up, with both new and previously written tracks.
Never accuse Neil Young of not following through with an idea, even it takes him 30 years to do so.
The rock icon announced plans this week to release a sequel to an album that he shelved in 1977. Chrome Dreams two will contain three previously written songs and seven new ones, and Young posted on his Web site this week that he previewed the tracks for his label Reprise Records yesterday.
The album, which is set to hit stores Oct. 16, was produced by "The Volume Dealers," the name under which Young and longtime partner Niko Bolas operate. It features one song that is 13 minutes and another that is 18:30.
Young's backing band on the album features Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina, bassist Rick Rosas, and pedal-steel guitarist Ben Keith. The Blue Note Horns are on one track, and a children's choir is on another.
To support the album, Young will launch a North American tour that kicks off around Oct. 13.
Young recorded the original Chrome Dreams in 1977 and shelved it, choosing to include several of the tracks from it on his next album, Stars and Bars. The original Chrome Dreams included several of Young's since-released signature tracks, from "Like a Hurricane" and "Powderfinger" to "Sedan Delivery" and "Pocahontas."
The original cover for Chrome Dreams was created by Young's long-time producer and friend, the late David Briggs. But all original documentation and art for the album was lost in a fire that destroyed Young's Malibu home in early 1978.
Young will likely debut several of the new songs at his scheduled performance at a Farm Aid benefit at New York's Randall's Island on Sept. 9.
