Lineup for Neil Young's annual two-day event, set for Oct. 27-28, also includes Jerry Lee Lewis, Eddie Vedder with Flea and Jack Irons, Tom Waits, John Mayer, and more.

Cooped up in the studio for much of the past two years, Metallica is set to play two acoustic shows as part of Neil and Peggy Young's annual Bridge School Benefit in California in late October.

Metallica's James Hetfield. Metallica's James Hetfield.

The 21st annual event, which raises money for the nonprofit group that helps people with severe speech and physical impairments, such as the Youngs' son Ben, will be held Oct. 27-28 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, Calif., near San Francisco. Young and his wife Peggy helped start the school in 1987 and have been holding this two-day event every year since then.

In addition to Metallica, which will be making its second Bridge School appearance, the event also landed the legendary Jerry Lee Lewis, as well as a handful of Bridge School stalwarts. As usual, Young will perform sets on both days of the event.

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder will perform with Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and original Chili Peppers drummer Jack Irons.

Tom Waits will be joined by the Kronos Quartet at the event, which will also include sets from John Mayer, Tegan & Sara, and Regina Spektor.

Tickets for the Bridge School benefit go on sale Sunday, Sept. 9 at 10am through Live Nation and Ticketmaster. Advance tickets are $150.00 and $75.00 for reserved seating, and $39.50 for general admission, plus applicable service charges.

Metallica Metallica

Metallica was easily the best, most influential heavy metal band of the '80s, responsible for bringing the music back to Earth. Instead of playing the usual rock star games of metal stars of the early '80s, the band looked and talked like they were from the street. Metallica expanded the limits of thrash, using speed and volume not for their own...

Jerry Lee Lewis Jerry Lee Lewis

Is there an early rock & roller who has a crazier reputation than the Killer, Jerry Lee Lewis? His exploits as a piano-thumping egocentric wild man with an unquenchable thirst for living have become the fodder for numerous biographies, film documentaries, and a full-length Hollywood movie. Certainly few other artists came to the party with more...

Eddie Vedder Eddie Vedder

Along with Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder reluctantly became a celebrity and an alt-rock spokesman when his band, Pearl Jam, hit the big time in the early-90's. But things didn't come easy for Vedder, with a tumultuous homelife as a youngster, he turned to surfing and rock music as a teenager - most notably such classic rockers as the Who, Neil...

Flea Flea

Best known as an integral member of one of the '80s-'90s most popular rock bands, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Flea (real name Michael Balzary) is widely regarded as one of rock's most talented bassists. By combining funk-style bass (à la Funkadelic) with psychedelic, punk, and hard rock, Flea created an original playing style that has been copied...

Tom Waits Tom Waits

In the 1970s, Tom Waits combined a lyrical focus on desperate, lowlife characters with a persona that seemed to embody the same lifestyle, which he sang about in a raspy, gravelly voice. From the '80s on, his work became increasingly theatrical as he moved into acting and composing. Growing up in southern California, Waits attracted the...

John Mayer John Mayer

After a short-lived stint at the Berklee College of Music, where he had a "great learning experience, but not because of class," John Mayer set down roots in Atlanta, where his music career hit the ground running. After one year in Atlanta, he released his debut solo album, Inside Wants Out, in 1999. At the same time, he became a regular in the...

Neil Young Neil Young

After Neil Young left the Californian folk-rock band Buffalo Springfield in 1968, he slowly established himself as one of the most influential and idiosyncratic singer/songwriters of his generation. Young's body of work ranks second only to Bob Dylan in terms of depth, and he was able to sustain his critical reputation, as well as record sales,...

Metallica
Metallica's first new material in over five years arrives after a flurry of non-musical activity that included a much-publicized spat over Internet file sharing, the departure of bassist Jason Newsted, and a lengthy stay in rehab for James Hetfield that suspended the recording of a new album indefinitely. Hetfield returned to the fold in late...

Jerry Lee Lewis
It often seems like there are only two ways for rock, country, and blues veterans to launch comebacks when they're senior citizens: confront mortality head on or surround yourself with superstar guests to help carry you through a half-hearted stroll through your back catalog, scattering a few new tunes along the way. At first glance, Jerry Lee...
Tom Waits "Real Gone"
Tom Waits
On Real Gone, Tom Waits walks a fraying tightrope. By utterly eliminating one of the cornerstone elements of his sound -- keyboards -- he has also removed his safety net. With songwriting and production partner Kathleen Brennan, he strips away almost everything conventional from these songs, taking them down to the essences of skeletal rhythms,...

Anybody who was initially confused by singer/songwriter John Mayer's foray into blues with 2005's Try! Neil Young
In a move that deliberately echoes the rush release of "Ohio" in the wake of the Kent State shootings, Neil Young bashed out his 2006 protest record Living with War in a matter of days, sometimes recording songs the day they were written, and then seized the opportunities of the digital age by streaming the entire album on his website only weeks...
