Renowned pianist and one of the pioneers of jazz fusion with the likes of Weather Report and Miles Davis succumbs to rare form of skin cancer.

Joe Zawinul, one of the pioneers of the jazz-fusion sound as founder of the 1970s jazz-rock group Weather Report and as a member of Miles Davis' Bitches Brew band, died early today near his home in Vienna, Austria. He was 75.

The legendary pianist had been hospitalized since last month and suffered from a rare form of skin cancer, his manager, Risa Zincke, told the Austria Press Agency. Zawinul died at Vienna's Wilhelmina Clinic.

Born in Vienna, Zawinul immigrated to the US, playing in bands with the likes of Maynard Ferguson and Dinah Washington, and serving as a member of alto saxophonist great Cannonball Adderley's band for nine years in the 1960s.

But it was Zawinul's brief collaboration with Miles Davis that propelled him to widespread acclaim. He penned "In a Silent Way," the title track for Davis' first foray into the electric sound that he defined in the mid-1970s.

In 1970, Zawinul founded the band Weather Report and produced a series of albums that included Heavy Weather, Black Market, and I Sing the Body Electric. The band's lineup included Wayne Shorter and Jaco Pastorius as well as a huge cast of session players during its 16-year history.

Zawinul founded the Zawinul Syndicate in 1987, and continued to perform up until several months ago. He toured Europe this past spring to mark the 20th anniversary of the Zawinul Syndicate, but sought medical attention when the tour ended.

"As a person and through his music, Joe Zawinul will remain unforgettable for us all," Austrian President Heinz Fischer said in a statement.

Funeral plans were not immediately released, but Vienna mayor Michael Häupl told reporters he would be given an honorary grave in the capital.

Joe Zawinul belongs in a category unto himself -- a European from the heartland of the classical music tradition (Vienna) who learned to swing as freely as any American jazzer, and whose appetite for growth and change remains insatiable. Zawinul's curiosity and openness to all kinds of sounds made him one of the driving forces behind the...

Weather Report Weather Report

Weather Report started out as a jazz equivalent of what the rock world in 1970 was calling a "supergroup." But unlike most of the rock supergroups, this one not only kept going for a good 15 years, it more than lived up to its billing, practically defining the state of the jazz-rock art throughout almost all of its run. Weather Report also...

Miles Davis Miles Davis

Throughout a professional career lasting 50 years, Miles Davis played the trumpet in a lyrical, introspective, and melodic style, often employing a stemless Harmon mute to make his sound more personal and intimate. But if his approach to his instrument was constant, his approach to jazz was dazzlingly protean. To examine his career is to examine...

Now reduced in size to a quintet (dropping the extra percussionist), Zawinul's Syndicate delivers its most overtly political album -- or shall we say, its most anti-political album with its forget-our-differences, one-world tone poems. If Lost Tribes sounds more like a Weather Report album than its Syndicate predecessors, it may be because the...

Or shall we say, that is that, the final album by a group called Weather Report, now captained and guided by Josef Zawinul. The photo of Zawinul and Wayne Shorter shaking hands on the back cover of the LP is definitely a farewell gesture, for Shorter turns up on only three of the eight cuts (having left the band while this record was being...
