Acclaimed rockers nab nods for artist of the year, most downloaded and blogged-about song, and "Woodie" alumni.

MTV's college channel unveiled its nominations for the 2007 mtvU Woodie Awards, and did so with the obligatory serving of penis innuendo.

The Shins The Shins

The Shins lead the pack with three nominations, including Woodie of the Year and the Alumni Woodie, as well as the Viral Woodie, which honors the most downloaded and blogged-about song.

Modest Mouse, Gym Class Heroes, Lily Allen, Justice, Linkin Park, and the Academy Is... all nabbed two nominations apiece, with Amy Winehouse, Common, Gym Class Heroes, and Lily Allen all joining the Shins for potential Woodie of the Year honors.

College students can vote for winners from now until Nov. 2 at mtvU. The winners will be awarded Nov. 8 at New York's Roseland Ballroom, and the ceremony will be broadcast on mtvU and mtvU.com a week later.

The Arcade Fire, Lil Wayne, Bright Eyes, Amy Winehouse, the Knife, Common, Klaxons, M.I.A., Spoon, CSS, the Rapture, TV on the Radio, Thom Yorke, and Paramore are also up for awards this year.

New for 2007 is the "best music on campus" Woodie, which will be awarded to the artist that earns the most votes and streams on BestMusiconCampus.com for the next six weeks. Two finalists will be flown to New York to appear on the broadcast.

The Shins' appeal is fading IMO. James Mercer complains when he sings and that is kind of annoying. The Woodie should go to Amy Winehouse.

The Shins The Shins

A classic guitar pop group almost nine years in the making, Albuquerque, NM's the Shins began in 1997 as the side project of singer/songwriter and guitarist James Mercer's primary band Flake. Mercer formed Flake in 1992 with drummer Jesse Sandoval, keyboardist Marty Crandall, and bassist Neal Langford; they eventually changed their name to Flake...

Modest Mouse Modest Mouse

Issaquah, WA, indie rock trio Modest Mouse was formed in 1993 by vocalist/guitarist Isaac Brock, bassist Eric Judy, and drummer Jeremiah Green. After honing their muscular sound in "The Shed" -- a makeshift practice space built by Brock on the land next to his mother's trailer -- Modest Mouse entered Calvin Johnson's Dub Narcotic Studios to cut...

Gym Class Heroes Gym Class Heroes

Melding elements of rap, rock, R&B, and funk into one cohesive and melodic sound, upstate New York's Gym Class Heroes had diverse appeal based on their impressive musical dexterity. Often touring with indie rock and pop-punk bands, they didn't fit comfortably into one specific genre; the quartet's music was rooted in traditional hip-hop, but...

With her omnivorous musical tastes and cheeky attitude, London-based pop singer/songwriter Lily Allen made a name for herself almost as soon as she released her demos on the Internet. Linkin Park Linkin Park

Old-school hip-hop, traditional classic rock, and spooling electronic vibes were the initial factors behind the building of the alternative metal quintet, Linkin Park. The band's southern Californian musical roots were also an underlying basis, for drummer Rob Bourdon, guitarist Brad Delson, and MC/vocalist Mike Shinoda formed a tight friendship...

Implementing live instruments instead of looped samples or beats -- and helmed by the quick tongue of MC Travis McCoy -- there's really no denying the enjoyable affair that is Gym Class Heroes' As Cruel as School Children. Lily Allen
Like most British pop, Lily Allen's debut album, Alright, Still, overflows with impeccably shiny, creative productions. However, Allen attempts to set herself apart from the likes of Rachel Stevens, Natasha Bedingfield, and Girls Aloud with a cheeky, (mostly) amusing vindictive streak in her lyrics that belies the sugarcoated sounds around them....

Perhaps if the cut-'n'-paste remix record Reanimation hadn't appeared as a stopgap measure in the summer of 2002, Linkin Park's second record, Meteora, would merely have been seen as a continuation of their 2000 debut, Hybrid Theory, instead of a retreat to familiar ground. Then again, Reanimation wasn't much more than a way to buy time (along...
