Along with radio rockers Linkin Park and Daughtry, pop stars rack up three nominations each to lead the contenders at the 35th annual American Music Awards.

For an awards show whose nominees are dictated by sales figures, it's no surprise that four of the year's biggest sellers lead the contenders for the 35th annual American Music Awards.

Beyonce and Timberlake lead the way. Beyonce and Timberlake lead the way.

Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Linkin Park, and Daughtry led AMA nominations with three apiece, leading a pack that also included Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts, Carrie Underwood, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, T.I., and Young Jeezy, all of whom garnered a pair of nominations each.

Award winners, who will be announced on November 18 during a ceremony held at the new Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, will be chosen for the first time by members of the public, who can vote online here.

Nominees were initially chosen based on record sales. Ballots were then sent to a national sampling of 15,000 people and the top three vote-getters in each category became nominees.

For the fourth year, Jimmy Kimmel will host the show. The initial lineup of performers includes Daughtry, Celine Dion, Fergie, and Rihanna.

Perhaps if the cut-'n'-paste remix record Reanimation hadn't appeared as a stopgap measure in the summer of 2002, Linkin Park's second record, Meteora, would merely have been seen as a continuation of their 2000 debut, Hybrid Theory, instead of a retreat to familiar ground. Then again, Reanimation wasn't much more than a way to buy time (along...
