Springsteen's Magic returns to No. 1

October 24, 2007 at 12:45:00 PM

In a paltry sales week, the Boss tops Kid Rock and Rascal Flatts for the top-selling album in the US.

In a slow week for album sales, Bruce Springsteen's Magic returns to the summit of The Billboard 200 despite a 42 percent sales decline. The Columbia effort moved 77,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan, climbing 2-1. The album bowed at No. 1 three weeks ago with 335,000.

Only a couple hundred sales short of the Boss' total, Kid Rock's Top Dog/Atlantic set, Rock N Roll Jesus, falls 1-2 with a 55 percent sales slip to 77,000. Rascal Flatts' Still Feels Good (Lyric Street) keeps the No. 3 spot warm for a second week after a 27 percent slide to 70,000. Even with a flat sales week at 64,000, Josh Groban's holiday album Noel zooms up 10-4.

Selling 62,000, rock troupe Jimmy Eat World's Chase This Light debuts at No. 5, which bests the No. 6 entry of 2004's Futures. But the Interscope album moved 62,000, far short of the 99,000-copy bow of Futures.

Reba McEntire's Reba Duets (MCA) scoots up a slot 7-6 with 59,000, while Disney's High School Musical 2 soundtrack climbs 9-7 with 57,000, both with 13 percent sales declines.

Santana earns his fourth top 10 album, as Ultimate Santana (Arista/Columbia/Legacy) bows at No. 8 with 56,000. The compilation includes the new track Into the Night featuring Nickelback's Chad Kroeger, which currently sits at No. 13 on the Hot AC/Adult Top 40 tally.

Back on the 200, Kanye West's Graduation (Def Jam) descends 6-9 with 54,000, a 25 percent sales hit. Colbie Caillat rounds out the top tier with Coco (Universal), which rebounds 16-10 with a 20 percent sales increase to 50,000.

Only a handful of other albums debut in the top 50 this week. Angie Stone's The Art of Love & War, released through the newly relaunched Stax label, enters at No. 11 with 45,000. Her last album, Stone Love, bowed at No. 14 in 2004 with 53,000. Rock act Thrice's The Alchemy Index: Vols. I & II (Vagrant) debuts at No. 24 with 28,000, while Toby Keith's Classic Christmas (Show Dog) brings Christmas cheer to the No. 39 spot with 18,000.

Album sales are down 4.9 percent from last week at 7.93 million units and 19.6 percent from the same week in 2006 (9.86 million units).
