In promotion for new DVD, I Told You I Was Trouble, fans who preorder can receive a pint glass or an ash tray.
The recent struggles of Amy Winehouse have largely incited two reactions: those that worry about the singer's problems with drinks and drugs, and those that know that such problems simply fuel our celebrity-obsessed culture's love for vices.
Universal Music, Winehouse's record label, apparently falls into the latter camp.
Universal is now giving Winehouse fans a chance to preorder a copy of her new DVD, I Told You I Was Trouble and to receive either a pint glass or an ash tray in doing so. For the serious fans of Winehouse and her struggles, the "Double Trouble Combo"--DVD, ash tray, and pint glass--can be had for a mere $30.
It's a brilliant promotional concept--albeit hilariously cynical--that supports the theory that the more Winehouse struggles with addiction and is featured in the gossip tabloids, the more records she sells.
On the DVD, Winehouse explains that she drinks because she is an insecure person.
"I'm quite an insecure person," she said. "I'm very insecure about the way I look. I mean, I'm a musician; I'm not a model. The more insecure I felt, the more I'd drink."
"I was just doing one destructive thing after the other,” she continued, in reference to her drug overdose in August. "I was quite self-destructive. Life's short--just do it, do you know what I mean? Life's short and I've made a lot of mistakes, you know. I always say I don't regret things and I don't say sorry, but I do really. I believe strongly in fate. I believe that everything happens for a reason."
