Pete Wentz breaks foot at Voodoo
Fall Out Boy has always had a famously intimate relationship with its fans. Whether or not those fans are interested in a close-up shot of Pete Wentz's swollen, discolored foot is another story altogether. The bassist broke a bone in his foot onstage at the Voodoo Music Experience festival in New Orleans last weekend, and posted a photo of it on the band's Web site this week.
"For anyone who was at the Voodoo Fest, you got to see me jump around," he wrote. "I ended up breaking the bone that connects my shin to my foot. No shows will be canceled. I am currently trying to get a 'rocker' boot, so I can have a walking cast. Currently my foot is the size of a small car. If you see me at a show come sign my cast."
B.I.G. family files motion
On the heels of the dramatic reversal by a prison inmate who had previously implicated a former police officer in the murder of Notorious B.I.G., the family of the slain rapper filed a federal court motion this week claiming the man lied when he recanted his story. The motion seeks access to phone and prison-visitation records for Waymond Anderson, a former R&B artist now serving a life sentence for murder in a separate case.
Anderson, who had been the central witness in the family's wrongful-death lawsuit against the City of Los Angeles, said in an Aug. 20 deposition that he lied as part of a scam involving B.I.G.'s family and attorneys to win a monetary settlement from the city.
Anderson accused the family and their lawyer of offering to cut him in for a portion of any award for falsely testifying that a former police officer, Rafael Perez, told him another former officer, David Mack, was involved in the March 9, 1997, killing of Wallace. Both Mack and Perez have long denied any involvement in the killing.
Winehouse clams up at MTV Europe Awards
Something about Amy Winehouse and MTV just doesn't mix. Forced to cancel her appearance at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards in September and at the mtvU Woodies this month, Winehouse clammed up in receiving the Artists' Choice Award at the MTV Europe Music Awards last night.
The chanteuse, embattled in recent months over drug abuse allegations that forced her to cancel her US tour and several appearances, was struck speechless while accepting the award before a cheering crowd. Wearing a short, cleavage-baring denim dress and her signature beehive hairdo, all she could muster was "um" and "thanks" before leaving the stage.
"She clammed up, she had a moment there and didn't say anything [on the microphone], which is a little sad," R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe, who presented the honor to Winehouse, told the AP. Winehouse was recently denied another visa to the US after she inadvertently signed a confession rather than a release form after paying a fine for a marijuana-possession arrest in Norway last month.
Santana's wife files for divorce
One of rock's longest-standing marriages is over. Deborah Santana, who claimed in a 2005 memoir that her husband Carlos Santana had been unfaithful during the course of their 34-year marriage, filed for divorce from the legendary guitarist in Marin County Superior Court on Oct. 19, according to the Associated Press.
Deborah Santana, who cited the proverbial irreconcilable differences in the filing, had also been a longtime business and philanthropic partner with her husband. They created the Milagro Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports underprivileged children. Earlier this year, they announced plans to create three Mexican restaurants in the San Francisco Bay area named Maria, Maria after one of Carlos Santana's Grammy-winning songs.
In her 2005 memoir Space Between the Stars, Deborah Santana described her husband as being unfaithful. After the memoir was published, Santana said, "I sincerely apologized to her and to my kids when I wasn't in my right mind and did something hurtful. It has helped me become more humble and to try harder to be the man she wants me to be."
Da Brat arrested for assault
Having famously feuded with Dustin "Screech" Diamond and the Go-Go's Jane Wiedlin on various bottom-feeding reality shows over the years, Da Brat is now reportedly taking her act to the Atlanta club scene. The 33-year-old rapper was arrested early Thursday morning on felony aggravated assault charges after allegedly hitting a woman in the face with a bottle of rum at Jermaine Dupri's Studio 72 club in Atlanta.
According to Atlanta's WSBTV Channel 2, the fight started out as a verbal disagreement but soon escalated to a shoving match. Witnesses say that the rapper then grabbed a bottle of rum and hit the victim, a waitress at the club, in the face with it. The unidentified woman was hospitalized with a deep cut on her cheek and above her eye. Da Brat--real name Shawntae Harris--was taken to the Dekalb County Jail and released on a $50,000 bond.
Lovett gets AMA honor
Lyle Lovett received the Americana Music Association's inaugural Trailblazer Award last night at the organization's 2007 Honors and Awards show at Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. The new award "seeks to honor those emboldened artists who create timeless musical capsules of individualistic style and purpose," the group said in a statement.
Lovett, who turned 50 yesterday, has been churning out genre-bending music for more than 20 years and over 11 albums. Lovett has garnered four Grammys in his career and just released his latest album, It's Not Big It's Large. Lovett also performed his song "If I Had a Boat" at the event, which saw Patty Griffin win the artist of the year award.
