Battles, Of Montreal, Arcade Fire, and Justice emerge as top contenders for annual independent music awards.

Showing love to a heap of acclaimed artists who won't likely get any face time at the Grammys, the 2008 PLUG Independent Music Awards unveiled its nominees this week.

Band of Horses Band of Horses

Battles and Of Montreal led all nominees with seven apiece, while Arcade Fire and Justice were right behind them with six apiece. Band of Horses and Panda Bear, the solo side project of Animal Collective's Noah Lennox, scored five each.

The awards, which will be voted online by fans and doled out at an awards ceremony March 6 at New York's Terminal 5, focus on both independent music and the media that cover and promote it. There will be 29 awards handed out, each of which has 12 nominees.

The six aforementioned nominees were joined in the artist of the year category by Animal Collective, El-P, Okkervil River, Radiohead, Spoon, and The National.

Ugh, such predictability. It's like the judges' only reference for new music is Pitchfork. I'm surprised there's no Grizzly Bear or Black Kids with all this hipster overload. Maybe I should start listening to more jazz.

Of Montreal

The brainchild of singer/guitarist Kevin Barnes, euphoric indie popsters Of Montreal were among the second wave of bands to emerge from the sprawling Elephant 6 collective. A native of Athens, GA, Barnes was inspired to form the group in the wake of a broken romance with a woman from Montreal; signing to Bar/None while living in Florida, he...

Radiohead Radiohead

Radiohead was one of the few alternative bands of the early '90s to draw heavily from the grandiose arena rock that characterized U2's early albums. But the band internalized that epic sweep, turning it inside out to tell tortured, twisted tales of angst and alienation. Vocalist Thom Yorke's pained lyrics were brought to life by the group's...

The Arcade Fire are not an emo band. Fronted by the husband-and-wife team of Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, the group's emotional assault -- rendered even more poignant by the dedications to recently departed family members contained in the liner notes -- is brave, empowering, and dusted with something that many of that genre's angst-fueled...
