Rockers don't land nominations for the film work, but The Frames' frontman Glen Hansard does for Once song.
Two acclaimed rockers were left out of the nominations for the 2008 Academy Awards, which were announced today, largely on a technicality that left them ineligible.
Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder's lauded soundtrack for the film Into the Wild didn't make the cut, as it was ruled ineligible because of "predominant use of songs." Vedder was eligible for best original song for the film but was not nominated.
And in a last-minute decision by the music branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood's score for There Will Be Blood was ruled ineligible because it is "diluted by the use of tracked themes or other pre-existing music."
Greenwood's score contains roughly 35 minutes of original recordings and roughly 46 minutes of pre-existing work, including those of such composers as Johannes Brahms.
But while the big names were shut out, Glen Hansard, frontman for Irish rock band The Frames, was nominated for best original song for "Falling Slowly" from the film Once. Hansard stars in the film as a busker and has drawn rave reviews for his performance.
Three songs for the film Enchanted grabbed original song nominations. The final song nominee went to "Raise It Up" by Jamia Simone Nash and Impact Repertory Theatre in the film August Rush.
In one other music note, Cate Blanchett garnered a nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role of Bob Dylan alter ego Jude Quinn in Todd Haynes' I'm Not There.
The Academy Awards will be presented February 24 at Los Angeles' Kodak Theatre. Click here for a full list of nominees.

Oldest First | Newest FirstThis year, for my greatest awe, I saw the beautiful, unpretentious and very very corageous Juno nominated for Best Movie, Best Director, Best Screenplay and of course Best Actress in a Leading role; That made me think: maybe something's changing, maybe the new blood is finally implementing and making count of what cinema, good cinema, should aspire.
This news ends up being another blow in the face, what the f**k are they thinking??? 3 Songs for "Enchanted"? Greenwood's "There Will be Blood" score ineligible for being in the middle of pre-existing tracks? And then there is Eddie Vedder, one of the greatest songwriters we've ever known, looked-up genius by certainly most of the people in the age to give a damn about cinema, not eligible for wrinting songs and not Orchester, boring music?
Come on people, wake up! this is 2008, not the medieval ages.
The only thing i have to say to all of you who "make" decisions is:
Go F**ck yourselves, hard and painfully.
We (the people) don't need your damn awards, and it's a shame the people who are in the business for the love have to bow to all you ignorant meatheads.
