Leak of footage showing troubled singer smoking out of a glass pipe has her seeking help, her label says.
It's unclear if the person who leaked a video of Amy Winehouse allegedly smoking crack had the singer's best interests in mind, but the move has had the necessary outcome.
Winehouse, the talented-yet-troubled singer whose 2007 album Back to Black was widely regarded as one of the best of the year, has entered a rehab clinic, her record label said today.
"Amy decided to enter the facility today after talks with her record label, management, family, and doctors," the Universal Music Group said in a written statement. "She has come to understand that she requires specialist treatment to continue her ongoing recovery from drug addiction and prepare for her planned appearance at the Grammy Awards. Amy entered the facility by mutual agreement and continues to receive the full support of all concerned."
Although Winehouse, 24, has frequently appeared haggard and disoriented in paparazzi photos in recent months, the video, which was shot in her London apartment and leaked to UK paper The Sun, shocked even those that have followed her downward spiral closely.
The grainy video showed Winehouse smoking something in a glass pipe minutes after she is heard saying she had just taken six tablets of the anti-anxiety drug Valium. The Sun said the video was shot the previous Friday in Winehouse's East London home.
The videotaped incident allegedly was recorded just hours before Winehouse attended a court hearing for husband Blake Fielder-Civil, 25, who is awaiting trial on assault and conspiracy charges. Her husband's incarceration has reportedly exacerbated her addictions and health issues.
Scotland Yard said yesterday that it is investigating the video to determine whether or not to file any charges.
Winehouse's father, Mitch Winehouse, said in an interview with The Sun that he was devastated by the images and hoped it would prompt his daughter to turn her life around.
"Your video of Amy taking drugs may well be the best thing that has ever happened to her," the newspaper quoted him as saying.
