Annual awards ceremony set to proceed without guild protest; Carrie Underwood, Beyoncé, Foo Fighters, Rihanna, and a reunited The Time to perform.

Music's most star-studded night of the year has gotten the green light to be itself.

The Writers Guild of America West has granted an interim agreement for the 50th annual Grammy Awards, letting the Feb. 10 telecast proceed with WGA writers. The guild endorsement also allows Screen Actors Guild (SGA) members--who were expected to show solidarity with the writers by skipping the ceremony--to attend. Artists who are also SGA members include 50 Cent, Justin Timberlake, and Common.

"The Recording Academy is gratified by the WGA's decision to grant the interim agreement we requested for our milestone 50th Annual Grammy Awards," the Recording Academy said in a statement. "Music fans worldwide can look forward to an amazing lineup of artists and performances on February 10, making our 50th anniversary show one of the most memorable ever."

Carrie Underwood and Beyoncé are slated to perform. Mary J. Blige and Aretha Franklin will share the stage with the Clark Sisters, Israel and New Breed, the Madison Bumblebees, and Trin-I-Tee 5:7 for a gospel segment. Also, Rihanna will be backed by reunited funk group The Time.

As previously reported, the Foo Fighters will perform "The Pretender" with the help of an orchestra partly stocked with winners of the annual "My Grammy Moment" contest. The orchestra will be directed by Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones.

The WGA waiver now gives the Grammy producers the chance to go after all the big-name talent you'd expect from a 50th anniversary show. One ongoing rumor has Michael Jackson making an appearance, given that the show airs just two days before the Feb. 12 release of the 25th anniversary edition of his classic Thriller album.

The event is being held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast by CBS in HDTV, on XM Satellite Radio via Westwood One Worldwide, and online at Grammy.com. Stay tuned for more performers and presenters.

Since the turn of the century, every American summer has seemed to produce one or two Caribbean-styled dance-pop hit sensations, and the summer of 2005 was no different, as the relentless dancehall-lite booming rhythms of Rihanna's "Pon de Replay" seemed as omnipresent as sunshine. Like Daddy Yankee ("Gasolina") and Sean Paul ("Get Busy") in...

The first country American Idol, Carrie Underwood grew up in the small town of Checotah, OK, and began singing with her church at the tender age of three. Throughout her childhood, she also performed at functions for the Lion's Club and Old Settlers Day, and eventually at festivals in several states. Along with developing her singing, Underwood...

While he was drumming with Nirvana, Dave Grohl was recording original songs at home that never received public release. Those tapes would become the foundation of Foo Fighters, the band he formed in 1995, after the death of Kurt Cobain. Like Nirvana, Foo Fighters melded loud, heavy guitars with pretty melodies and mixed punk sensibilities with a...

Given the tightly controlled nature of American Idol, it's a wonder that the televised talent contest has never produced a winner who specialized in country music, since there's no segment of modern popular music that is controlled tighter than contemporary country. Maybe this thought was in the minds of Simon Fuller and the rest of AmIdol's 19...
