Spears' hospital stay extended; estate fight continues
The staff of the UCLA Medical Center will have to continue to endure the swarm of the paparazzi for another 14 days. Britney Spears, who was escorted to the center last Thursday by a phalanx of more than a dozen motorcycle officers, two police cruisers, and two police helicopters, has had her stay at the hospital extended by 14 days, according to the Associated Press.
People.com reported that only the singer's psychiatrist would have had the authority to request the involuntary stay, noting that Spears could be released earlier if she legally demands to be released or her doctor deems her well enough for outpatient treatment. Spears' hospital stay is her second in a month for mental health reasons. Both began with a 72-hour mental health evaluation.
As Spears remains hospitalized, the battle over temporary control of her estate continued. Her attorney told a court commissioner today that Spears doesn't want her father Jamie Spears in charge of her welfare as designated by a Los Angeles judge last Friday.
But a court-appointed attorney who interviewed Spears in the hospital psychiatric ward said the pop star can't even grasp what is going on in court and "she lacks the capacity to retain counsel." Today's hearing was continued to allow the court commissioner more time to investigate Spears' condition.
Jay-Z to play Glastonbury
One of the UK's most storied music festivals is about to get a Hova injection. Michael Eavis, founder of the legendary Glastonbury Festival, told the BBC over the weekend that he has booked Jay-Z to perform at the event, set for June 27-29 on a farm in South West England.
"He will appeal to the young people and under-25s for sure, so that's a big pull for them," Eavis told the BBC. "It's not like the traditional one we do, like Radiohead, Coldplay and Muse and Oasis."
Jay-Z joins Neil Diamond on the bill for the festival. Registration for Glastonbury tickets opened last Friday and fans have until March 15 to lodge their interest before tickets go on sale on April 6.
Winehouse may still attend Grammys
Although getting caught on video allegedly smoking crack and then going to rehab is not the traditional warm-up for a successful Grammy night, Amy Winehouse may still give it a go. Usmagazine.com reported today that the troubled singer left the London rehab clinic where she has been for the past two weeks to go to the US Embassy to renew her visa.
The site reported that the 24-year-old Winehouse "is desperate to go and has been told she can go on the condition that she has a minder there and returns to rehab when back in the UK." No word on whether Winehouse plans to perform at the event. Winehouse is up for six awards, including album of the year, song of the year, and record of the year.
Tom Petty keeps it simple at Super Bowl
It was solid, but a far cry from watching Prince go ballistic in the pouring rain while wearing a black bandana. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers played the halftime show at Super Bowl XLII yesterday, and Petty kept it simple with a quartet of classic, simple songs--no guests, pyrotechnics, or wardrobe malfunctions.
The set at University of Phoenix Stadium featured Petty classics "American Girl," "I Won't Back Down," "Runnin' Down a Dream," and, fittingly for the New England Patriots, "Free Fallin'."
But some are crying foul, saying that Petty lip-synched at least part of his set. The Dallas Morning News raised the issue today, suggesting that Petty used a backing tape for his vocals, but the paper was unable to confirm the charge.
Pimp C OD ruled accidental
As many has suspected, veteran Houston rapper Pimp C of UGK did indeed die of an overdose in December, but the incident was ruled accidental and did not involve any illegal drugs. The Los Angeles County coroner's office ruled today that Pimp C, 33, died due to a combination of cough syrup and a pre-existing sleep apnea condition.
The autopsy report cited "promethazine/codeine effects and other unestablished factors" as the cause of death--specifically the use of prescription medicine used to treat coughs and congestion, and his pre-existing condition. Pimp C--real name Chad Butler--was found dead in an LA hotel room on December 4 after a concert the night before at the House of Blues with Too Short.
UGK is up for its first-ever Grammy award on February 10, as "International Player's Anthem (I Choose You)" featuring Outkast was nominated for best rap performance by a duo or group.
Idol runner-up gets married
American Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee married actor Nick Cokas on Saturday in Beverly Hills, California, according to People.com. "[Nick] is the love of my life," McPhee told the site. "This is a once in a lifetime occasion and everything is just perfect."
Fellow season-five Idol contestants Kellie Pickler and Mandisa were among the 305 guests in attendance, the site reported. McPhee and Cokas met in 2005 when they performed in a Los Angeles theater production of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.
