When the Wu-Tang Clan told us to "Bring Da Ruckus" in 1993, they probably weren't speaking specifically to a young boy from Ohio with a predilection for robots.
But Dan Haug, a Dayton, Ohio-based DJ and producer, has heeded the call nonetheless.
Going by the name Ruckus Roboticus, the cut-and-paste specialist has crafted his debut album, Playing With Scratches, entirely out of samples, following in the footsteps of Cut Chemist, DJ Shadow, and many other great audio collage purveyors. Like many of his sonic ancestors, Ruckus piles chopped-up audio from children's records and educational tracks on top of hip-hop beats, with deft scratches laden throughout.
Ruckus first generated some buzz with his remix of Bloc Party's "Hunting For Witches," a clever rework that saw the producer weave in samples from The Crucible, Arthur Miller's 1953 play about the Salem witch trials.
As a DJ, he's shared the stage with the likes of RJD2, DJ Premier, The Juan Maclean, Prince Paul, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Cosmo Baker, and Mr. Lif.
On Scratches, Ruckus wields both quick wit and a knack for the groove, interspersing comic audio snippets with dancefloor-filling beats. The two fit together nicely, as on the superb "How to Handle Grownups," which offers several suggestions on dealing with your elders over a thick bass line, bouncy beat, and swift scratches.
Ruckus says he plans to keep bringing it, with plenty more remixes on the way. Stay tuned.
