Stooges to perform Madonna tribute, while R&B diva will honor Philly soul vets Gamble & Huff.

When Madonna is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next week, she'll be getting a musical tribute from an unlikely source.

The Stooges The Stooges

Iggy & the Stooges have signed on to perform for Madonna at the induction ceremony on March 10 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. The pair have few similarities musically, but both hail from Detroit, and Iggy & the Stooges opened a series of shows for Madonna in 2004.

Justin Timberlake will induct Madonna at the ceremony. The two collaborated on "4 Minutes (to Save the World)," the first single off Madonna's forthcoming album, Hard Candy, which hits stores April 29.

As for the other inductees, Irish singer-songwriter Damien Rice will perform for Leonard Cohen, who will be inducted by Lou Reed. Ben Harper will induct Chicago harmonica legend Little Walter, while James Cotton will play his tribute.

Inductees John Mellencamp and the Ventures will perform at the event and will be inducted by Bill Joel and John Fogerty, respectively.

John Mellencamp John Mellencamp

The Dave Clark Five will be inducted by movie star Tom Hanks, who wrote, directed, and starred in the 1996 film That Thing You Do!, which was loosely based on the band. The Hall of Fame is promising a "special tribute" to the band but has not yet announced contributors.

Philadelphia R&B diva Patti LaBelle will perform a tribute to acclaimed Philly soul producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, while Jerry Butler will induct the duo.

The 2008 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees were chosen by the 600 voters of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. Artists are eligible for inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25 years after their first recording is released. The event will air live on March 10 on VH1 Classic and will be streamed live by Best Buy.

After a star reaches a certain point, it's easy to forget what they became famous for and concentrate solely on their persona. Madonna is such a star. Madonna rocketed to stardom so quickly in 1984 that it obscured most of her musical virtues. Appreciating her music became even more difficult as the decade wore on, as discussing her lifestyle...

Patti LaBelle Patti LaBelle

Soul diva Patti LaBelle enjoyed one of the longest-lived careers in contemporary music, notching hits in a variety of sounds ranging from girl group pop to space age funk to lush ballads. Born Patricia Holt in Philadelphia on May 24, 1944, she grew up singing in a local Baptist choir, and in 1960 teamed with friend Cindy Birdsong to form a group...

John Mellencamp John Mellencamp

Throughout his career, John Mellencamp has had to fight, whether it was for the right to record under his own name or for respect as an artist. Of course, he never made it easy on himself. Mellencamp began his career in the late '70s as a Bruce Springsteen clone called Johnny Cougar. As his career progressed, his music became more distinctive,...

Leonard Cohen Leonard Cohen

One of the most fascinating and enigmatic -- if not the most successful -- singer/songwriters of the late '60s, Leonard Cohen has retained an audience across four decades of music-making interrupted by various digressions into personal and creative exploration, all of which have only added to the mystique surrounding him. Second only to Bob...

The Dave Clark Five The Dave Clark Five

For a very brief time in 1964, it seemed that the biggest challenger to the Beatles' phenomenon was the Dave Clark Five. From the Tottenham area of London, the quintet had the fortune to knock "I Want to Hold Your Hand" off the top of the British charts with "Glad All Over," and were championed (for about 15 minutes) by the British press as the...

Little Walter

Who's the king of all postwar blues harpists, Chicago division or otherwise? Why, the virtuosic Little Walter, without a solitary doubt. The fiery harmonica wizard took the humble mouth organ in dazzling amplified directions that were unimaginable prior to his ascendancy. The Ventures The Ventures

Not the first but definitely the most popular rock instrumental combo, the Ventures scored several hit singles during the 1960s -- most notably "Walk-Don't Run" and "Hawaii Five-O" -- but made their name in the growing album market, covering hits of the day and organizing thematically linked LPs. Almost 40 Ventures' albums charted, and 17 hit...

Trouble No More, John Mellencamp's first covers album, came together rather quickly, following his performance of Robert Johnson's "Stones in My Passway" at a tribute concert for the late Billboard editor Timothy White. There is an air of finality on Leonard Cohen's Dear Heather. Cohen, who turned 70 in September of 2004, offers no air of personal mortality -- thank God; may this elegant Canadian bard of the holy and profane live forever. It nonetheless looks back -- to teachers, lovers, and friends -- and celebrates life spent in the process of actually living...
