Working for a Nuclear Free City

British rockers mix a slew of influences into a sonic stew that is both psychedelic and danceable--and tell us how they do it.

Here's hoping that British rock band Working for a Nuclear Free City doesn't start a trend in naming strategies, lest we start seeing bands like "Curb Wheels" and "Speed Hump."

The emerging UK group, named after a remnant street sign near Piccadilly Station in their native Manchester, makes up for any moniker mishaps with a stunningly diverse sound.

The brainchild of Gary McClure and Phil Kay, the band draws on an array of influences--they list hundreds on their MySpace page--and the result somehow manages to maintain a common thread.

MP3.com caught up with McClure and Kay just prior to a show in San Francisco to talk about their expansive US debut, Businessmen & Ghosts, their distaste for the UK music scene, and the possibility of being called on by the Bush Administration to deal with nuclear matters in places like Tehran and Pyongyang.
