Rockers look to shirk the traditional album-release process by putting out Consolers of the Lonely all at once on March 25.

In yet another twist on the traditional album release, the Raconteurs have decided to forgo the typical buildup for a new album by announcing its latest, Consolers of the Lonely, and releasing it just one week later.

The Raconteurs The Raconteurs

The Detroit rock group, fronted by the White Stripes' Jack White and Detroit singer Brendan Benson, unveiled details of its second album yesterday. The 14-track Consolers will hit stores next Tuesday, March 25.

"We wanted to get this record to fans, the press, radio, etc., all at the exact same time so that no one has an upper hand on anyone else regarding its availability, reception, or perception," the band said in a statement on its Web site. "We wanted to explore the idea of releasing an album everywhere at once and then marketing and promoting it thereafter."

Unlike previous innovative moves by Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails, the Raconteurs haven't rolled out a groundbreaking payment system--or at least not yet. But the band did say that the album will be available in a variety of formats and at "local mom and pop indie retailers, corporate superstores, supermarkets, iTunes, Amazon, the band's own website, and any other location that could get the record up and going this quickly."

A video for first single "Salute Your Solution" is expected to arrive March 25 as well, "provided it gets edited in time," the band's statement read. "We just filmed it the other day!"

Record labels have traditionally asked for three or four months' lead time to get an album into stores, plotting radio singles, interviews, and retail campaigns.

"The Raconteurs are forgoing the usual months of lead time for press and radio set up, as well as forgoing the all-important 'first week sales,'" the band said. "We wanted to explore the idea of releasing an album everywhere at once and then marketing and promoting it thereafter."

The band urged fans to buy the full-length album and not to cherry-pick songs. "But until iTunes and other digital services allows bands to release their albums with the option of NOT breaking it up, it will be sold in that fashion on those particular sites," the band said, noting that fans in Japan will be able to download the record via their mobile phones.

The Raconteurs have outlined a short tour in support of the new album, with more dates to come.

A self-described "new band made up of old friends," the Raconteurs feature the White Stripes' Jack White and power pop maestro Brendan Benson on vocals, keyboards, and guitars, and the Greenhornes' drummer Patrick Keeler and bassist Jack Lawrence as the group's rhythm section. The idea for the band began when Benson and White collaborated on the...

It's hard to call the Raconteurs a genuine supergroup since there's only one true rock star in the quartet: the White Stripes' eccentric mastermind Jack White.
