Toronto-based singer is big winner at annual Canadian music-industry event in Calgary.
Frozen out at this year's Grammy Awards despite four nominations, Canadian songstress Feist fared much better on her home turf.
The Toronto-based singer, 32, garnered five Juno awards last night at a ceremony in Calgary, Alberta, including the honors for album of the year for The Reminder and single of the year for "1 2 3 4," the song that rose to fame in a ubiquitous iTunes ad in 2007.
The eclectic singer also won awards for pop album of the year, songwriter of the year, and artist of the year. She took home the Shortlist Prize earlier this year for The Reminder.
She collected the trophies and performed at the Juno Awards show at the Saddledome arena in her hometown of Calgary, Alberta, two blocks from a community hall where she began her musical career as Leslie Feist, her full name.
"This was a good event and it was a nice marker for a year--a nice recognition for everyone who's out there, sweating blood and tears," she said. "It's a nice moment but I don't know that music is meant to be a competition."
Feist said the five Juno trophies will likely stay in Calgary under the care of her mom, who told her that she now has enough little glass men to form a foosball team.
"Because there's four [trophies] from 2003, '04 and '05 from Broken Social Scene and the ones from [previous disc] Let It Die," Feist said. "So, now I guess there's nine, and they all live at her house. She's gonna, like, get some football games going between them, I don't know."
Veteran alt-country rockers Blue Rodeo grabbed three awards, for group for the year, best adult-alternative album for Small Miracles, and best video for "C'mon." The awards bring the Juno 10 to 10 for the Toronto-based outfit led by Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor.
Singer Michael Buble took home the Juno fan choice award, while Nova Scotia-based indie band Wintersleep took home the Juno for new group. Triumph, the 1970s-era power trio, was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. The members said they are planning a reunion tour.
The ceremony, hosted by comedian Russell Peters, also featured performances from Avril Lavigne, Hedley, and legendary crooner Anne Murray.
